'Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge' Game Show To Debut On Disney+ In 2020

Disney+ has obviously become a massive success in a short amount of time. The streaming service gained over 10 million subscribers in its first day, and has been steadily growing ever since. It has been an especially big hit with Star Wars fans as it introduced us to the first ever live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian. While Mando continues to garner rave reviews from critics and fans, it's become clear that this is just the tip of the ice berg for Star Wars content on Disney+.

Today Lucasfilm announced on StarWars.com that a new game show titled Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge will debut on Disney+ next year. The show promises to test the abilities of its young contestants as they go from Padawans to full fledged Jedi Knights. The show is developed by Lucasfilm’s Scott Bromley (The Star Wars Show) and Steve Blank. Jedi Temple Challenge will be executive produced by Mickey Capoferri, Christine Beebe, Dean Houser, David Chamberlin, and Mike Antinoro. The series will be produced by Lucasfilm and Endeavor Content’s non-scripted group.

But perhaps the most exciting aspect of Jedi Temple Challenge is who will be hosting it. Ahmed Best, who is known to Star Wars fans as Jar Jar Binks in the Prequel Trilogy and other media, will be returning to a galaxy far, far away to play a Jedi Master on the show who will mentor the contestants. Best will be joined by a humanoid droid companion who will be voiced by Veep actress Mary Holland.

Mickey Capoferri, Lucasfilm’s senior director of Online Content & Programming, had this to say about Jedi Temple Challenge:

“This is definitely a kids game show like no other. The various challenges will test a Padawan’s connection to the Force in three locations — a forest planet, on board a Jedi star cruiser, and inside a Jedi temple — immersing them and the audience in a fun, humorous, and exciting competition.”

As someone who grew up with the classic kids game shows of the 1990s like Legends of the Hidden Temple, I can't help but be incredibly excited by this news. It's something we've truly never seen done before with Star Wars and further highlights the limitless possibilities of Disney+. While I'm still anxiously awaiting the release of more dramatic and mature series, like the ones in development for Obi-Wan Kenobi and Cassian Andor, it's more unexpected things like this that really have my attention. Giving younger fans a game show of their own, not only to watch but to even possibly participate in, will be something truly special!

Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge will hit Disney+ in 2020!
