With the Skywalker saga coming to a close next month with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, naturally there is huge pressure on director JJ Abrams to deliver. Luckily, he had somebody who knows more about Star Wars than anyone else that he can consult: George Lucas. Abrams spoke with Total Film recently about the conversations he had with the Star Wars creator as he was writing the scrip for The Rise of Skywalker.
Abrams said,
"He had a lot of things to say about the nature of the Force, the themes
that he was dealing with when he was writing the movies. Yes, there were some conversations about
Midi-chlorians – he loves his Midi-chlorians. But it was a very helpful
thing. Sitting with him is a treat, just to hear him talk, because it’s
fucking George Lucas talking about Star Wars. I always feel it’s a gift
to hear him talk about that stuff. Because the effect that he had on me
at 10 years old is utterly profound."
The release of the film next month brings to a close a story that Lucas started back in 1977, so it's very reassuring to hear that he was consulted on its ending. Lucas once said that one of his biggest fears about Star Wars going forward without him was that the Force would become "garbly-gook" and, essentially, lose its mysticism. Hopefully, Abrams takes his consultations to heart as he expands our understanding of the Force in the Skywalker saga's finale.
Lucas' relationship with the new films has been fraught at times. Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed in his recent memoir that the Star Wars creator was quite unhappy when he learned that his story treatments would not serve as the basis for the sequel trilogy. Since then, Lucas has distanced himself from the series, at least the sequel films (he did pay visits to the Rogue One, Solo, and The Mandalorian sets), although Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy still occasionally consulted him throughout the process. With that in mind, it's quite nice to have him back involved even in a small role for the finale.
