Late last week, Star Wars: The Last Jedi actress Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico) deleted her Instagram account after months of harassment from racists and misogynists who are using Star Wars as an excuse to harass people. The following days have seen a wave of people coming out in support of Tran and to condemn these so-called "fans" who think what they are doing is even remotely acceptable. One of the highest profile people to do so is The Late Show host Stephen Colbert, who addressed the news in one of his monologues and then shared a parody trailer for Star Wars Episode IX: Shut The Hell Up You Broken Hateful Dweebs. Check it out below,
As funny as Colbert's monologue and parody trailer are, the situation itself is not. These "broken hateful dweebs" have taken Star Wars fandom, something that is a pure celebration of love, and are doing their best to destroy it by turning it into some sort of bizarre, alt-right fantasy. Star Wars fandom is about, to quote a certain Resistance worker, "saving what we love, not fighting what we hate." And it's up to all of us who don't think that harassing people for their race, gender, sexuality, religion, ect. is alright to stand up and not let these hateful voices dominate. This isn't about how you feel about The Last Jedi or Rose Tico, you can dislike the film and its characters all you want, this is about standing up to bullies--something Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Poe Dameron, Rey, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jyn Erso and countless other Star Wars heroes would do. It's time for all us to #ForceOutHate.
