At the end of last year the world lost a pair of icons when Princess Leia actress Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds passed away. Following Fisher and Reynold's deaths there was an outpouring of love from fans, both as a celebration of their legacy and in support of Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd. Lourd had appeared alongside her mother in The Force Awakens, playing Lt. Connix, and will return in The Last Jedi.
On Friday the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office completed their autopsy on Fisher. According to the Associated Press, the cause of death was sleep apnea and other undetermined factors and that Fisher suffered from atherosclerotic heart disease and drug use.
Following the coroner's report, Lourd released a statement to People Magazine. The statement reads,
"My mom battled drug addiction and mental
illness her entire life. She ultimately died of it. She was
purposefully open in all of her work about the social stigmas
surrounding these diseases.
She talked about the shame that torments
people and their families confronted by these diseases. I know my Mom,
she’d want her death to encourage people to be open about their
struggles. Seek help, fight for government funding for mental health
programs. Shame and those social stigmas are the enemies of progress to
solutions and ultimately a cure. Love you Momby."
