The Lucas Museum Of Narrative Art Previewed At SDCC

There may not be a better place to kick off the promotion for the upcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art than San Diego Comic Con.  The annual convention, which is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year, has been, in many ways, celebrating narrative art in all its forms for five decades.  With this in mind, three of the curators working Star Wars creator George Lucas and his wife Melody Hobson, the co-founders of the museum, took the stage at SDCC today to give us our first glimpse into the collection that will be featured at the museum when it opens in Los Angeles in a couple of years.

The curators featured on the panel were Ryan Linkof, Anastasia James, and Erin M. Curtis, who guided the panel attendees on a look at the museum and some of its collection.  First showing what the museum would look like, both inside and out,
They also spoke about how, despite the fact that museum won't open for several years, they have already started running youth programs.  So far, there have been two programs, one of which invited teens to create their own comic books, and the other gave young people the opportunity to create their own documentary films.  All of the programs celebrate narrative art, something which Lucas himself summed up in the second image below,
The trio revealed that the Lucas Museum would focus on six categories of art: World Art before 1950, America Art, Children’s Book Illustration, Comic Art, Photography, and Cinema, and shared examples of all these.  Though they saved it for last in the panel, we'll start with the cinema collection.  The Lucas Museum will feature an extensive array of items from the Lucasfilm archives, stretching from its founding in 1976 to its purchase by Disney in 2012.  Items from all the films the company worked on will be displayed, however there will definitely be an emphasis on the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies.  Check out some of the items in the collection below,
The items from the Lucasfilm archives featured in the panel were just a small sample of what will be featured in the museum, both in terms of the cinema exhibits and the overall collection. Many samples from other aspects of the museum's collection were also featured in the panel, you can check out many of them below,

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is slated to open in Exposition Park in Los Angeles, California in a few years.  The museum has been a passion project for Lucas since his retirement from Lucasfilm in 2012, and will be comprised of items from the vast art collection he has built up over the course of his life.  To keep up with all the goings on with the museum, you can check out their website at lucasmuseum.org
