By: Dominic Jones

There may not be a better place to kick off the promotion for the upcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art than San Diego Comic Con.  The annual convention, which is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year, has been, in many ways, celebrating narrative art in all its forms for five decades.  With this in mind, three of the curators working Star Wars creator George Lucas and his wife Melody Hobson, the co-founders of the museum, took the stage at SDCC today to give us our first glimpse into the collection that will be featured at the museum when it opens in Los Angeles in a couple of years.

John Williams Honored By Lucas, Abrams, Ford & Others At AFI Awards

By: Benjamin Hart

John Williams, the man, the myth, the legend, is undoubtedly greatest film composer of all time, one of the influential of our time. Films such as ET, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Jaws, Superman and, of course, Star Wars account for only a portion of Williams' incredible career that has spanned 60 years.

Now, just after his return to a Galaxy far, far away with his score for The Force Awakens, Williams shows no signs of stopping. It was recently announced that the legendary composer was going to be honored with an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, and would be the first non-actor or director to do so. On Thursday a plethora of familiar faces attended the AFI Gala where Williams was presented with the award, and several made a point to give him some much deserved praise. Big names such as Steven Spielberg, Drew Barrymore, Seth MacFarlane and Will Ferrel were among the roster of speakers who saluted Williams.

But those who made the biggest impact on the evening were the ones who have had the closest relationships with Williams and his music. As Variety reports, the Maker himself, George Lucas, appeared and thanked Williams for his contributions to the Star Wars saga:

Speaking of “Star Wars,” Lucas noted it was Williams’ music that helped turn a film “meant to be a fantasy for young people” into a culture-shaking franchise, telling the composer, “You made my life so easy. I had so many ideas for other movies, but I never had to get around to them thanks to ‘Star Wars.’"

The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams once more lovingly joked about Williams and the pet names gives to others:

“‘Oh Angel, I just hope this cue is good enough.’ These are the kinds of preposterous things that John Williams says at his own scoring sessions,” Abrams said. “It’s like he’s never read his own resume. He’s the sweetest superhero of all time.”

Even Basketball player Kobe Bryant was there to cheer on Williams, saying that one of the composer's iconic Star Wars themes helped Bryant recover from an injury he received back in 2013:

“The music I chose to return to the court was the Imperial March from ‘Star Wars.' Why? I needed John Williams to inspire me. That’s music for a villain. The Black Mamba was back and the Imperial March immediately put me into character.”

One of the biggest highlights was when Harrison Ford took the stage while serenaded by the iconic Indiana Jones theme and delivered a hilarious response:

“That damn music follows me everywhere... They play it every time I walk on the stage. Every time I walk off the stage. It was playing in the operating room when I went in for a colonoscopy.”

But Ford did not leave without expressing his heartfelt appreciation of Williams:

“This is an example of entertainment elevated to the level of art... John, you’re a genius.”

John Williams himself was also on stage to accept the award and spoke about his career, shared memories and thanked his friends and colleagues. Among the things he covered was the fact that he worked on a love theme for for Luke and Leia, not knowing of their true relationship that would eventually be revealed in Return Of The Jedi:

“I wrote quite a heated love scene, including a big climax, thinking that Luke and Leia were lovers. And I found out two years later that they were brother and sister.”

His further reaction to receiving the award is woven with humility:

“Once I get over being stunned, I will treasure this night always. Tomorrow morning, when I’m back at work, I will try to deserve all of this."

You can read more about the event by heading over to Variety. The ceremony will air on TNT on June 15 at 10:00 p.m. (ET/ PT). We all certainly want to congratulate Mr. Williams on this very much deserved honor. The Force will be with John Williams... always.

Highlights From Harrison Ford's EW Tumblr Q & A

By: Benjamin Hart

Earlier today Entertainment Weekly hosted a Q & A with Harrison Ford on Tumblr which produced some fascinating results. The legendary actor answered a variety of questions related to his various roles, including Han Solo and Indiana Jones. He discusses his relationship with cast and crew of The Force Awakens and his character's emotional demise in the film. He also gave some intriguing, and sometimes hilarious insight into acting, filmmaking and his personal life.

Below we have collected some highlights from the Q & A. Harrison's words are in bold:

Are you and John Boyega best friends?

Whatever John says…

What advice would you give to young aspiring filmmakers?

Figure out how to do it for themselves and not to take anybody’s advice.

What do you think of Adam Driver, what is he like to work with?

He’s an absolute pleasure. He works independently with real proper ambition. He brings a lot to the table. He’s a wonderful actor and a very kind, generous human being.

I have heard that you are also a pilot. What inspired you to be one?

I wanted to learn something. I hadn’t learned anything for a while and I thought it would be interesting and challenging. I always wanted to fly, but I wasn’t able to afford it at first. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.

Who's cuter, you or daisy ridley?

Daisy Ridley. But it’s close.

Who did you have the most closest relationship with on the set of Star Wars?

JJ Abrams.

Out of any costume you've ever worn for a movie or a show, which was the most comfortable and which was the least.

Indiana Jones wears a leather jacket in the jungle…I’ve never had a proper explanation for that, but it looks cool. I’ll say that can sometimes be the most uncomfortable.

JJ is very active in the shooting of his movies, what is your favorite quality that he possesses?

A kind intelligence.

Who made the funniest joke on the set of the force awakens?

J.J.

On a film as big as Star Wars, with so many on-set explosions and green screens and CGI characters, are there tricks you use as an actor to stay focused and present and in character?

I focus on the kernel of story that needs to be given expression…serve the story.

Will you go to the Disney Star Wars park when it's finished?

Sure. Why not.

Describe John Boyega in 3 words

Bright young man.

You've played a vast array of characters, traveled to numerous destinations, and met many influential people- but what remains on your bucket list that you're most excited to cross off?

You know when you travel for work, you don’t reallly get a chance to experience the place you visit. I would like to go back to Sri Lanka, where we shot one of the Indiana Jones movies. I’d like to go back to most of the places I’ve been. I’d like to go back to Morocco. I’d like to go back with family.

We know Indiana Jones hates snakes, but what about you, Harrison? What do you think about snakes? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Ugh-get-'em-off-me?

No, I don’t mind snakes at all. Next to John Boyega, they’re almost my new best friends.

If I have a party when I get The Force Awakens on DVD, will you come?

No. But thank you.

How do you feel about the ending in The Force Awakens? (I myself am heartbroken)

I think it’s a fitting use of the character. I’ve been arguing for Han Solo to die for about 30 years, not because I was tired of him or because he’s boring, but his sacrifice for the other characters would lend gravitas and emotional weight.

Out of all the characters you've ever played, which one do you relate to the most?

Every character I’ve ever played is informed by my own experience, my own emotion, my own understanding.

Do you ever watch movies that you've starred in before?

Every once in a while, but not for fun.

If the cast of the force awakens was stuck on an island, who would be the leader and why?

I would be the leader. Just cause. Although we’d end up having to listen to Carrie because if Mama’s not happy, nobody’s happy.

Mr. Ford, have you ever considered doing a voice acting role for an animated movie? You've got such a cool voice!

I’d love it. Waiting for a good fit.

You have to love Harrison's wit and wisdom! Be sure read the full Q & A on EW's Tumblr!

Matthew Wood & David Acord Discuss The Sounds Of 'The Force Awakens' With Nerdist

By: Benjamin Hart

The sound designers behind Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens have been getting a lot of much deserved attention recently through interviews and even awards. Supervising sound editors Matthew Wood and David Acord are widely know for their work in the Star Wars saga and deserve much credit for not only mixing in classic sounds but also creating new ones, even providing their own voices in many instances. Just recently Wood and Acord spoke with Nerdist about the sound design of The Force Awakens. They cover a variety of sounds and how they created them, including Kylo Ren's Lightsaber, Teedo, the Rathtars, and further discussed the various voices in the film, which included David Acord's now infamous portrayal of FN-2199(Traitor!!). You can check out a few excerpts from the extensive interview below:

Nerdist: Star Wars is, more than any other film, I think, known for its unique sound. Can you talk about some of the new sounds you designed for The Force Awakens?

David Acord: I think the most obvious new sound effect in the movie is Kylo’s lightsaber. We were attempting, along with his Force power effect, to create sound effects that would mimic his persona, which is this raw power he has that’s not quite formed. He’s not well trained, but he’s extremely powerful. It’s a little wild and dangerous. The sword itself, the look of the sword has the extra darts coming out the side, and it’s really sparky and wavery and it looks a little homemade. The idea of the sound was to match that–something that sounds like raw energy, just pure power, very brutal and kind of wild and dangerous sounding.

The Force sound to go along with Kylo had that deep, raw, animalistic sound. It’s a chunky, raw growl that’s supposed to imitate the Force power he wields, which is a little more raw versus Rey’s Force power , which tends to be—in the few moments when she’s using the Force, hers is a little more smooth and rhythmic and like a heartbeat. That’s the contrast between the two.

Nerdist: Since you do contribute to rounding out and developing characters’ personalities with your work, at what point in the story process does your work start?

David Acord: Once you read the script and come on board, early on there’s some obvious pieces [you know] you’re going to need to tackle. I mentioned the sword, there’s some new spaceships, some ambiances. Maz’s bar–you know that’s going to be a whole thing even before you see a frame of it. Then obviously, once you see the image, it all starts to take shape.

I think the first thing that I designed, I was asked to do—there were two things. One was the Teedo character that captures BB-8 in the beginning, the voice for him and then the two junkers that hassle Rey when she’s cleaning pieces of stuff, the voices for those two guys. Those are the earliest design pieces I made, and they’re vocal designs. That’s my favorite thing to do is alien and creature vocals; that was super fun for me.

Nerdist: Along that line, what are some of the weirdest sources you pulled from to design a sound in The Force Awakens?

David Acord: [Laughs] Off the top of my head, the Kylo Ren Force rumble—the really chunky and animalistic rumble—is my cat’s purring. It’s heavily pitched and slowed version of my cat’s purr that becomes Kylo Force rumble.

When the rathtar has his mouth on the cockpit of the Falcon, when it’s trying to eat the cockpit, that is me literally choking myself. [Laughs] Finger down my throat in front of the mic to accomplish that and then it’s pitched down.

Nerdist: Dave, I would be remiss if I didn’t ask you about voicing FN-2199, a.k.a. TR-8R. I know it was part of the “additional voices” recording—how were those recorded and how did “Traitor!” come about?

David Acord: Normally you have a loop group, which is a collection of highly trained, skilled voice actors, gather in a room. There are a couple of microphones, and the movie is projected on a screen and the scenes are tagged or spotted ahead of time [to say], “We need two stormtroopers talking in the background of a hangar here.” That scene will come up, two actors will walk up to the mic, and will ad-lib a performance. Matthew’s expertise is in dialogue and he was very careful to pick loop group actors that were all Star Wars savvy. There are a ton of Clone Wars alums and names from previous Star Wars movies who were cast as loop groupers because they would know what to say and how to properly deal with things like the mundane dialogue two stormtroopers would have.

And then occasionally, you’ll just be working and, “We need this guy to say this right now” and we’ll go record it. That’s another way; it’s on the spot. You find somebody that can do it, and you do it. That’s how FN-2199 happened. Originally, it was J.J. His voice was a temp placeholder, and he wanted to replace it. It went through four other actors, I think, before it landed on my performance and he was okay with it. It’s a really funny thing to me. It’s a cool scene; the stunt actor, Liang Yang, really did all the hard work in that scene, but it’s fun to be part of. I didn’t even know it was a thing on the Internet until Pablo Hidalgo emailed me and asked if he could post on StarWars.com that I was the voice of FN-2199.

You can read the rest of this insightful interview by clicking here, in which they discuss BB-8's voice, the sounds of Maz Kanata's Castle and an interesting Indiana Jones Easter Egg.

Rumor: Dagobah Centerpiece and More Planned for Disney's Hollywood Studios Overhaul

By: Dominic Jones

Ever since Lucasfilm was purchased by Disney is October 2012 fans have been wondering when the Star Wars presence at the Disney Parks would increase.  It seems that, with the D23 Expo happening next month, we are on the cusp on an announcement regarding this.  A new report from ThisIsInframous.com suggests that Disney will announce a $3 Billion overhaul of Disney's Hollywood Studios at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.  This would include at least two new Star Wars attractions, in addition to the already existing "Star Tours" ride and Jedi Training Academy interactive show, including, "a Dagobah centerpiece for where Echo Lake and Gertie the Dinosaur currently reside."  It is also believed that the Jedi Training Academy will be moved in doors.

This overhaul will come at a cost.  Most of the current rides and attractions at Hollywood Studios will be shutting down to make room for the new stuff.  The only exceptions being, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster, Toy Story Mania and the Great Movie Ride.  This includes the "Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular Show," which has been rumored to be on its last legs for some time now.  But Indy fans need not worry too much, an updated version of the "Indiana Jones Adventure" ride at Disneyland in California is reportedly going to make its debut at Disney World as part of the overhaul.

Disney is expected to announce these changes during the D23 Expo which takes place in Anaheim from August 14th-16th.  As for how long this will take, ThisIsInfamous.com writes

"Now the time frame for all of this to be completed is a bit of a mystery. Disney is well aware that the park remains popular, and they’d like to keep guests coming through the turnstiles as they work through this period of transition. As a result, you’re not just going to see each of the rides and shows set to go closing their doors all at once. Disney will be moving through in waves, knowing that a handful of rides aren’t going to be enough to satisfy their crowds."

If this all is true, then D23 is going to be an exciting time for Star Wars and Disney fans.  Hopefully some of the other rumored attractions like the Millennium Falcon walk through and Mos Eisley Catina restaurant are part of the overhaul.

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney,

Rumor: Indiana Jones Show At Disney World Closing To Make Way For Star Wars Expansion

By: Benjamin Hart

It seems another layer has been added to the heavily rumored and talked about "Star Wars Land" at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. PopWrapped reports that the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular, which sits adjacent to Star Tours in Disney's Hollywood Studios, is scheduled to close at the end of the year. They explain that show was initially never intended to last more than a few years, and that now it is finally being closed to make way for "several major Star Wars additions... with construction set to begin in the spring of 2015." Also expected for closure is the nearby American Idol Experience, and that too, according to Popwrapped sources, is going to be replaced with Star Wars themed attractions, as well as the entire area surrounding Echo lake.

This news is bittersweet for both myself and others. The Indiana Jones Stunt show is an awesome, classic Disney attraction that has been operating since 1989. Losing it would be a great loss for the park. But at the same time, more Star Wars themed rides and attractions does sound very exciting. But as always this is just a rumor, take it with a grain of salt.

So sound off in the comments(or on Facebook & Twitter)! Is closing the Indy show justified by replacing it with something Star Wars? Or should they simply find somewhere else to put "Star Wars Land"?

Harrison Ford Reddit AMA Recap

By: Benjamin Hart

The one and only scruffy looking nerf herder, Harrison Ford, recently took to Reddit to answer questions from fans in an "ask me anything"(AMA). I sorted through them and picked out all the Star Wars related answers, as well as some of the more interesting ones about Indiana Jones, Blade Runner and more. Check them out below!

Harrison's words are in bold.

SuperC142: Hi Mr, Ford. I think we would all like to know: Who shot first? Han Solo or Greedo?

I don't know and I don't care.

Makuta: Did you ad lib Han's famous line "I know"?

It's not really an ad lib, it was a suggestion, and movie making's a real collaborative process at its best. You don't ad lib it, you suggest it and then you try something in rehearsal and then you agree. So it was my suggestion, because I thought it was more of a character line than what was written, but the director and Carrie and I all thought it was a good idea at the time so we did it.

AFatEskimo: Are you still mad at Lando?

Lando who?

Battlescarred98: What would you rather fight: 100 chicken sized Jabba the Hutts or 1 Jabba the Hutt sized chicken?

The latter. Please.

spartanss300: How did you feel about Star Wars when you first started? How were you approached?

I was approached with the offer of a job, which at that point, was all I wanted to hear. I had helped George Lucas audition other actors for the principle parts, and with no expectation or indication that I might be considered for the part of Han, I was quite surprised when I was offered the part. My principle job at the time was carpentry, I had been under contract as an actor at Columbia and Universal. I had a house at the time I wanted to remodel, a bit of the wreck of a house. I'd invest money in tools but wouldn't have money for materials, so I realized this was another way of putting food on the table. And allowing me to pick and choose from the acting jobs that were being offered at the time.

TBTakaTBT: Can you elaborate on what happened between you and Chewbacca that lead to you having a falling out?

Ha. Well that was a skit for Kimmel, I think. With his writers, the idea behind it was that Chewbacca had borrowed my fictional wife.

se7en30: If you and Mark Hamill fought who would win?

Me, of course.

MrPink24: Who did you prefer portraying, Han or Indiana?

I think Indiana Jones was a lot of fun to do because of the places we went to and the adventures and the action. But Han Solo was also a huge part of my life.

veeler: I love you.

I know.

breylin: Were there any injuries / weird occurrences / funny stories on any of the Indiana Jones sets?

Oh, let's see. On the first Indiana Jones movie, I tore an ACL in one of my knees, can't remember which knee, the scene in which I was fighting the big German mechanic on an airplane called a flying wing, I was run over by the landing gear and injured my knee, but I can't remember which one it was. Lots of bumps and injuries along the way.
Funny stories? We were shooting in Tunisia, and the script had a scene in which I fight a swordsman, an expert swordsman, it was meant to be the ultimate duel between sword and whip. And I was suffering from dysentery, really, found it inconvenient to be out of my trailer for more than 10 minutes at a time. We'd done a brief rehearsal of the scene the night before we were meant to shoot it, and both Steve and I realized it would take 2 or 3 days to shoot this. And it was the last thing we were meant to shoot in Tunisia before we left to shoot in England. And the scene before this in the film included a whip fight against 5 bad guys that were trying to kidnap Marian, so I thought it was a bit redundant. I was puzzling how to get out of this 3 days of shooting, so when I got to set I proposed to Steven that we just shoot the son a b**** and Steve said "I was thinking that as well." So he drew his sword, the poor guy was a wonderful British stuntman who had practiced his sword skills for months in order to do this job, and was quite surprised by the idea that we would dispatch him in 5 minutes. But he flourished his sword, I pulled out my gun and shot him, and then we went back to England.

iamaAMAfan: Hello Harrison! Who would win in a celebrity boxing match: Han Solo or Indiana Jones?

The promoter would win.

TJ_Silva: Hey! First I'd like to say when I was younger I use to think Indiana Jones played Han Solo in Star Wars. I was corrected many times but still didn't quite understand as a five year old. My question, what was it like being a part of two of the most iconic film series? Thank you for all your work!

What was it like? It was like being incredibly lucky.

Brownie_scout: How do you feel about snakes?

I actually like snakes! When I was young, I was a boy scout nature camp counselor, and one of our projects was collecting snakes and creating an environment for them, so I'm quite familiar with snakes and think they'r fantastic creatures.

shivan21: Hi Harrison! How do you choose your projects? And has this process changed for you since 1980s?

You know, it's very hard to say what the motivation is these days. Most of the time I love the material, have the time free, and look for something different to do. I look for people I enjoy working with, I look for material that i think will make a film that people will go to. It's my job.

goborage: What movie quote do you get asked to do the most?

"Get off my plane."

DrRockso2112: What's the best and what's the worst set you've ever been on?

The set for Blade Runner was maybe the hardest set I've ever worked on because I think we worked 50 nights in a row, and it was always raining.

rootwinterguard: Harrison, Blade Runner is my favorite movie of all time. What are you thoughts on Ridley Scott's talk of making a sequel? How can he improve upon perfection?

I'm quite curious and excited about seeing a new script for Blade Runner if in fact the opportunity would exist to do another, if it's a good script I would be very anxious to work with Ridley Scott again, he's a very talented and passionate filmmaker. And I think it would be very interesting to revisit the character.

ClumpOfPubes: Did you keep any props from any of your movies, if so which ones are your favorite?

No, I don't keep any, I'm not terribly nostalgic and I don't have a lot of things from my movies. And certainly don't have a lot of them around my house. Those are separate worlds for me.

spannybear: Hey Harrison, Huge fan of all your work, I was wondering what was your most enjoyable skill that you learned for a specific role and which role was it? And how did you go about learning it?

Well, I don't know that I've learned any real skill, but what I love about acting is learning about different lives, so when you play a policeman, you will often spend some time with policemen that can help you understand them and what goes on in the real life of a policeman, same with a doctor, a surgeon, a scientist, a secret agent, so you get to learn something about different people's lives every time. Research is very important to me.

rozman0: Hello Mr. Ford. Do you have any words of wisdom you'd be willing to share with an aspiring actor?

You know, all I can say is that it's rewarding and challenging, and the competition is so strong that the chances of being successful in that area are statistically daunting. But most people give up, or are unable to sustain themselves until they have the opportunity to become successful which means to get work, so the only thing I can say is try to figure out how not to give up. If it's a true ambition and you really have a passion for storytelling, try and figure out how to hang in there.

backgen[??]: Hi Harrison! I've seen you on a couple of late night talk shows, where it really seems that you hate being interviewed, or maybe you're just uncomfortable? Am i right? And if i am...why?

Oh no, in most cases, those guys are so talented and so funny. I don't hate it at all, in fact it's interesting you would think that because I usually have a really good time. I'm there to bring attention to some project that's about to be released, and it's great to be able to take advantage of that to bring attention to bring attention to the film.

biscuitSnatcher: I live in your old house on Woodrow. Are there any secrets I should know about?

Yes. There's millions of dollars buried in your basement.

TheHenryHoover: What is your favourite type of cheese?

Manchego.

Someone said thank you for being a part of so many childhood films: Well, thank you. I really appreciate that. It's a privilege to be able to be involved with people as talented as the people I've had the luck to work with, and it's just been a great experience for me, and I'm glad that so many of the films I've had the luck to do were films that could be enjoyed by families together.

Rumor: Episode VII Model Makers Being Offered Seven Year Contracts, Including Indy 5

It seems that Lucasfilm is looking to put together a team of expert model makers to work on several of its upcoming projects.  A new report from Den of Geek suggests that the model makers are being offered seven year contracts that include working on the entire sequel trilogy, three spin-off films, and the long rumored Indiana Jones 5.

Den of Geek also reports that security at Pinewood studios, home of Episode VII, is increasing as a full scale Millennium Falcon is under construction.

These rumors do make sense.  If you have a great team working on Episode VII, you likely want to continue working with them for as long as possible.  As for the Indy 5 aspect, if previous rumors that Harrison Ford would only do more Star Wars if work began on Indy 5 are to be believed, it bodes well for having Harrison in the film (not that anyone is too worried about that not happening).  As for the Pinewood elements, the part about security is no real surprise (happens on every blockbuster film).  However, there were rumors that the Millennium Falcon was already built, so this rumor seems to contradict that.

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed, or denied, by Lucasfilm or Disney.
