Star Wars fans tuning into the Super Bowl looking for something other than football, specifically a trailer for Star Wars Episode IX, will be disappointed. Deadline is reporting that while Disney has purchased ad space during the big game, it will not be used to promote JJ Abrams' upcoming conclusion to the sequel trilogy. It is expected that the ad space will go towards Marvel and Disney Studio films that are coming out the next few months, such as Captain Marvel, Dumbo, and Avengers: Endgame.
Last year's Super Bowl did feature the first teaser for Solo: A Star Wars Story, however the circumstances surrounding Solo were different that those around Episode IX. The biggest difference was that Solo was coming out three months after the game, where as Episode IX is still ten months away. Also, given Solo's disappointing turn at the box office, the effectiveness of promoting Star Wars during the Super Bowl is questionable (though it was far from the only issue that led to the film's box office issues).
The Solo trailer failed to break through all the noise surrounding the game itself and all the other trailers that dropped during that four hour period. Disney likely feels that they're better off waiting for Star Wars Celebration in April, Lucasfilm's official fan convention, when they will have no other competition for views. According to Deadline, "the thinking is that Episode IX can feasibly create its own
weather whenever Disney decides to launch the trailer; it doesn’t need a
big 103 million-viewed event to prop the December 20 release."
There had been some buzz in the last few week's that a trailer would be released during the big game, however the "sources" on those reports are known liars and perpetrators of fake news. Deadline, on the other hand, has a long history accurate reporting with trustworthy sources (such as the casting of Alden Ehrenreich, Ben Mendelsohn, and Dominic Monaghan). It just goes to show, before you get too excited about any Star Wars news reports, consider the source. Because there are people who are profiting off the clicks they get when they invent or spread inaccurate stories.
While it would have been cool to see a Star Wars Episode IX during the big game, however we don't have that much longer to wait (71 days) until Star Wars Celebration. Lucasfilm launched trailers for both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi at Celebrations in 2015 and 2017. Hopefully the trend will continue in 2019.
