The next big release in the world of Star Wars gaming is still pretty far away. Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson and CFO Blake Jorgensen held their annual Q3 conference call yesterday and they gave brief update about when fans can expect to see new Star Wars games. They addressed the game that Respawn is working on, with Jorgensen giving fans a bit of an idea when they can expect that game. Jorgensen said that Respawn's game, "most likely will drop in Fiscal 20 versus another [Star Wars] Battlefront." EA's fiscal year 2020 lasts from April 1st, 2019 to March 31st, 2020.
The Respawn game was first announced back in May 2016, and was featured briefly in the EA Star Wars "A Look Ahead" video from E3 that year. Little is known about the game, other than Game Director Stig Amussen's statement from May 2016, that the game will be a, "third-person action/adventure game set in the Star Wars universe."
Jorgensen also touched on the future of Star Wars Battlefront and when we will see a third installment in that franchise. He told investors that the company has not yet decided on when that will be released. However, based on his comment s about the Respawn game, it sounds like we won't see it until after the Respawn game is released, meaning we'll see another extended break between Star Wars gaming releases from EA.
The world of Star Wars gaming has had some rough times over the past few months. First, there was the news in October that EA would be shutting down Visceral Studios and moving production of the game to their Vancouver Studio (with much of the game to be changed as a result). Then there was the controversy surrounding the release of Star Wars Battlefront II and micro transactions. EA has struggled, since they obtained the license to make Star Wars games in 2013 have struggled to please anyone with their releases. The two games that were released received mixed reactions and the third game they were supposed to release got stuck in development hell for four years before being (essentially) cancelled. All that to say, EA has a lot of ground to make up if Star Wars console game is to be a success. Hopefully, Respawn is up to the challenge.
