Pablo Hidalgo Talks Flashbacks In Star Wars

A great deal of rumors have been swirling around Star Wars Episode VII as of late, some of which claim that the film will include flashbacks. Now flashbacks so far have been a rarity in the Star Wars saga, never appearing in the films and only once in The Clone Wars. Recently at San Diego Comic Con, Pablo Hidalgo, of the Lucasfilm Story group, commented on whether or not flashbacks will be used to develop the backstories of characters in Star Wars Rebels. Initial reports claimed that Pablo had said that flashbacks are not part of Star Wars storytelling overall, implying that not only Rebels but all future Star Wars productions would avoid flashbacks. But now it seems that was a misunderstanding. Pablo Hidalgo took to Facebook earlier this week to clarify his comments:

"Looks like the Del Rey SDCC panel is up on Youtube. I will, as usual, stay the heck away from the comments, but I understand my quote about flashbacks has really fueled a lot of discussion about projects outside the subject matter of this panel. So at 4:20 mark (heh heh), what I said was, "But one of the conventions, as far as Star Wars storytelling goes, AT LEAST AS REBELS, is we don't do flashbacks." So there you go. Continue to debate endlessly."

One of the recent rumors suggests that flashbacks will play a key role in Episode VII, giving insight into the 30+ years prior the film and beyond. Pablo's comments certainly could leave the door open for these rumors to be at least be plausible. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
