Opinion: The Clone Wars Strike Back in Rebels

By Ciaran Duggan,

In 2013 Dave Filoni publicly announced the depressing news that Star Wars: The Clone Wars would be taken off our screens. The remaining relic of George Lucas’ Star Wars Empire was terminated in both brutal and swift fashion. At least this was the outlook adopted by many fans of the Clone Wars TV series.

Star Wars Rebels Season Two Coming To Blu-Ray And DVD This Summer

By Ciaran Duggan,

In the last hour, Lucasfilm has announced that the latest season of Star Wars: Rebels will be coming to Blu-Ray and DVD on August 30, 2016.

Star Wars: Rebels is a hit animated television series which focuses on a cell of rebels, the crew of the starship Ghost, and their efforts to triumph against the evil, Galactic Empire. Lucasfilm disclosed the synopsis of Season Two in their announcement:

"Amid growing Imperial oppression on Lothal, the rebels are forced to seek out new allies throughout the galaxy and additional resources to sustain their fight against the Empire. With the help of Ahsoka Tano, the crew of the 'Ghost' bands together with a secret rebel cell and ex-soldiers from the Clone Wars to join a fledgling alliance to restore peace and freedom to the galaxy against new  imperial Inquisitors and Darth Vader himself."

Supplemented to this, Lucasfilm has revealed that both the Blu-Ray and the DVD will contain a number of bonus features, as listed below:

DVD

  • Connecting the Galaxy: Rebels Season Two - Uncover hidden references, easter eggs and connections to the Star Wars universe found throughout the season
  • Rebels Recon - Blast off with 20 fun, fast-paced episode recons, featuring behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with cast and crew, and more!
Blu-Ray

  • From Apprentice to Adversary: Vader vs. Ahsoka (Exclusive to Blu-Ray) - Executive Producer Dave Filoni reflects on the climatic ending of the season, when Ahsoka Tano finally confronts Darth Vader in a long-awaited, fierce, and epic lightsaber battle.
  • All DVD Bonus (see above)
Star Wars: Rebels Season Two Blu-Ray Front Cover

It is striking that Lucasfilm has decided to highlight the availability of bonus features on both the DVD and Blu-Ray platform. Lucasfilm has made it clear that the Star Wars: Rebels DVD version will contain featurettes. This decision could have been determined by the criticism levied at Lucasfilm because of the lack of bonus content on the Force Awakens DVD version, in the UK.

Now we know when Season Two of Rebels is hitting stores, fans will no doubt hope Lucasfilm release more information about the upcoming Season Three of Star Wars Rebels. Could there be an announcement at Star Wars: Celebration? I hope so.

Gina Torres Joins The Cast Of 'Star Wars Rebels' As Ketsu Onyo

By: Benjamin Hart

Although there have been no official announcements regarding it, we noticed in the credits of last night's Star Wars Rebels episode that a new, well know actress has joined the cast of the hit animated series. Perhaps best known for her role as Zoë Washburne in the beloved but short lived sci-fi series Firefly, Gina Torres has been officially confirmed as the voice of Ketsu Onyo in Rebels. Ketsu made her debut in the latest episode "Blood Sisters" and was introduced as a bounty hunter and old friend of Sabine Wren's.

Gina Torres is actually the second Firefly alumni to join the Star Wars saga in recent months. It was announced earlier this year that Alan Tudyk, who played her onscreen husband Wash in Firely, is portraying a motion capture character in the first Anthology film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, due for release on December 16th, 2016.

On behalf of all Star Wars fans, we certainly want to welcome Gina to the Star Wars family! We can't wait to see and hear more from Ketsu.

It's awesome that we're finally beginning to learn more about Sabine's backstory. We know a lot transpired on Mandalore during the Clone Wars, and Sabine has hinted at her time at the Imperial Academy on Mandalore. Learning more about her journey to becoming a Rebel, and what role Ketsu played in it, is going to be very interesting.

"Blood Sisters" airs Wednesday, November 18th at 9:30pm ET/PT on Disney XD!

By: Benjamin Hart

With photos, TV spots and trailers for The Force Awakens galore nowadays it's easy to forgot we've still got brand new episodes of Star Wars Rebels coming out each week. Now, thanks to a report by Star Wars News Net, we have received information on the next batch of episodes that will be airing between now and when The Force Awakens hits theaters.

Apparently listings for five new episodes of Star Wars Rebels appeared on Zap2It, which provide us with titles and air times for each episode. Star Wars News Net also provided story synopses for the first two episodes. You can check it all out below:

Blood Sisters - Airing Wednesday, November 18th at 9:30pm ET/PT
"After running into an old friend from Mandalore, Sabine must confront House Vizsla to restore the honor of her family."

Stealth Strike - Airing Wednesday, November 25th at 9:30pm ET/PT
"A new Imperial ship captures Ezra, Commander Sato, and his crew, forcing Kanan and Rex to go undercover as Stormtroopers to free the Rebels."

The Future Of The Force - Airing Wednesday, December 2nd at 9:30pm ET/PT

Legacy - Airing Wednesday, December 9th at 9:30pm ET/PT

The Secret Of Prisoner X10 - Airing Saturday, December 12th at 9:30pm ET/PT

Notice that the mid-season premiere, "The Secret Of Prisoner X10", is airing on the Saturday prior to the premiere of The Force Awakens. This has led to some speculation that this episode could tie into The Force Awakens in some way. It seems unlikely, but we can definitely hope so. Nevertheless, we'll have plenty of Rebels to entertain us while we wait for the new film.

Rumor: 'Star Wars Rebels' Season Two Episode Names & Descriptions Revealed

By: Benjamin Hart

Anticipation is building quickly for the second season of Star Wars Rebels as we grow close to the premiere on October 14th! We have know for a while now that the first episode of this new season is titled "The Lost Commanders" and will deal with the Ghost crew seeking out and enlisting the help of Captain Rex and his fellow Clone Troopers. The following episodes have been more of a mystery, but some new information has surfaced that sheds light on them. The Disney XD TV listings were recently updated on Zap2It to include two upcoming episodes of Rebels, which show titles, air dates and short plot descriptions. They are:

Relics of the Old Republic - Airing October 21st
"Ezra and the crew begin to develop friendships with Captain Rex and his colleagues."

Always Two There Are - Airing October 28th
"Ezra, Sabine, Zeb and Chopper travel to an abandoned medical station."

Additionally, Jedi-Bibliothek appears to have gotten their hands on some extended plot synopses for both episodes. While they are a bit difficult to read due to being automatically translated from German to English, they still might give us a few more interesting story details. Potential SPOILERS may also be included:

Relics of the Old Republic
"While Ezra and slowly close the other friendship with the old clone troopers, Kanan may simply take no confidence. But when the Empire finds out that the clones with the rebels in cahoots, all must work together suddenly."

Always Two There Are
"Looking for inventories for the fleet dare Ezra, Sabine, Zeb and Chopper a mission to an abandoned Medi Station. But when two of Darth Vader sent inquisitors Sabine and Ezra put at risk, Zeb and Chopper have come up with something in order to save her friends."

Also thanks to Jedi-Bibliothek we have titles and descriptions for two more episodes, ones we presume will follow the aforementioned ones. Again, the translation is difficult to understand, and two tites are provided for each episode, so take this as you will:

The Brotherhood (Brothers of the Broken Horn)
"To escape the pressures of responsibility as a rebel and Jedi, Ezra makes on with Chopper to a rescue mission, after having received a distress signal. Surprised, he notes that the ship belongs in need Hondo Ohnaka. This suggests Ezra, to join him."

A Master of his Art (Wings of the Master)
"Since the rebels need a new ship to arrive at an Imperial blockade, Hera embarks on a dangerous mission to meet an eccentric marine engineer, and win its trust. But that will be enough to get him a ship?"

While these do appear to match what we've previously seen and heard, we can't be sure of their validity until they're officially confirmed by Lucasfilm or Disney. If they do turn out to be true, we certainly have an exciting season ahead of us!

'Star Wars Rebels: Season Two' Press Conference Recap

By: Benjamin Hart

Star Wars Rebels is once again in the news just ahead of the premiere of the hit animated series' second season. Earlier today it was revealed that Sarah Michelle Gellar will be voicing the Seventh Sister, and just a few minutes ago a press conference wrapped which featured Executive Producer Dave Filoni, along with cast members Dee Bradley Baker(Clone Troopers), Freddie Prinze Jr.(Kanan), Vanessa Marshall(Hera) and Ashley Eckstein(Ahsoka) discussing the upcoming season. During the press conference it was announced that a new trailer for season two is slated to be released next week. In addition, the panel revealed several other fascinating details:

  • The trailer will feature a big moment for Sabine and Mandalore.
  • Dave Filoni has charts and diagrams of Mandalorians and their culture.
  • Sabine's history will be explored this season.
  • Kanan will reveal his past concerning Caleb Dume in an honest an emotional way that's described as "the type of confession that makes you stronger."
  • Filoni remarked that Boba Fett is "always a possibility" to appear, but we will not see him in season two.
  • One episode will focus on Chopper and reveal how Hera found him.
  • This season will delve into Hera's backstory and her history with Ryloth.
  • All of the Ghost crew will have their own background story episodes.

Very exciting stuff! I can't wait to see the new trailer, and it sounds like we're finally get to find out where all these characters came from and why they are motivated to fight the Empire. It's definitely something many fans have been hoping to see since the series began.

Season two of Star Wars Rebels will premiere on October 14th with the airing "The Lost Commanders" on Disney XD at 9:30pm! That episode, along with the following one "Relics of the Old Republic", will be screened at New York Comic Con on October 8th ahead of the premiere.
