If you've never seen the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special, consider yourself lucky. The TV special, which was produced by Lucasfilm and featured appearances by Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill, was so bad that Star Wars creator George Lucas has never allowed it to be released publicly ever again. As such, it has gained a somewhat cult-like classic status and references to the special have even made their way into the current Star Wars canon.
One upcoming reference is the titular character's weapon in the upcoming Disney+ series The Mandalorian, which calls back to the animated segment of the special. The animated adventure, which is one of the special's few redeeming qualities, is also the world debut of Boba Fett, and features Fett wielding a weapon that forty-one years later Pedro Pascal's character will wield in live-action.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight's Ash Crossan, Favreau revealed that he was the one to recommend featuring references to the Holiday Special, and even joked that he would like to make a new Star Wars Holdiday Special somewhere down the line. The director addressed fans directly and said, "if you want to see a holiday special let Disney+ know." If you've never seen the Holiday Special, I can't say I recommend watching the whole thing (though Jon Favreau might disagree). However, you can watch the animated segment, and see the debut of Boba Fett and the rifle, below,
The Mandalorian is set following the events of Return of the Jedi and follows the adventures of a "lone gunfighter", as he navigates the galaxy in the post-Empire/early days of the New Republic.
