Rian Johnson Talks Briefly About The Timing Of Production On His 'Star Wars' Trilogy

With the upcoming release of his new film Knives Out, Rian Johnson (writer/director of The Last Jedi) has been doing many interviews where, of course, he's also being asked about Star Wars.  But Johnson's not just being asked to look back on The Last Jedi (and everything that came with it), he's also looking ahead at the upcoming trilogy of Star Wars films that he will be overseeing.  In an interview with The Evening Standard, Johnson addressed the question of when production would begin on those films and when we can expect to see his next non-Star Wars movie.

Johnson said, "the truth is they're still figuring out their schedule, their game plan. If it's possible for me to squeeze in another film before or while working on that, I will."

There have been many questions about when we'll see Johnson's next Star Wars movie.  Disney announced earlier this year the release dates for the next three Star Wars movies after The Rise Of Skywalker, with those movies being slated to come out in 2022, 2024, and 2026.  It was also confirmed that the 2022 movie, at least, would be made by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.  Which begs the question of where Johnson's trilogy will fit in there.  Based on his answer above, it sounds like Lucasfilm/Disney are still trying to figure that out as well.

As we await the first film in Johnson's new trilogy, at we'll have The Rise Of Skywalker and Knives Out to look forward to.  Check out the trailer for Knives Out below,
