Lucasfilm announced this week that a new TV special taking fans behind the scenes of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, the new Star Wars theme park open now at Disneyland in Anaheim, California and opening soon at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, will air on Freeform on September 26th. The special, titled Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – Adventure Awaits, will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, will feature celebrities like Kaley Cuoco, Keegan-Michael Key, Jay Leno, Sarah Hyland, and Miles Brown.
The Anaheim park opened a couple of months ago, and has been met with largely positive reviews (you can listen to ours here). However, attendance has been somewhat lower than expected. Disney CEO Bob Iger attributed this to their decision to "managed demand" for the park, by limiting the number of attendees who could visit the land in the first several weeks of it being opened. The CEO also implied that Disney's decision to raise the prices of single day tickets and local hotels decision to raise their prices, may have priced out some fans who wanted to visit Galaxy's Edge.
Galaxy's Edge is slated to open in Florida later this month. It will be interesting to see how the attendance at Disney World compares to that of Disneyland. However, much like the Anaheim park, the Orlando version of Galaxy's Edge will be opening with just one ride. The "Rise of the Resistance" ride will be opening in Florida in December, and California in January. The ride's delay has also been pointed to as a potential reason for the park's lower than expected attendance.
Perhaps the Freeform special may help drum up attention for the park. However, the thing that will likely help "things to work themselves out", as Iger put it, is tie-ins with the release of The Rise Of Skywalker later this year in December.
