Somewhat lost among the flurry of trailers and tickets this week, was the fact that we received our first official confirmation of the MPAA rating given to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This was revealed on physical movie tickets that fans bought in person at various theaters. Here is a photo of the tickets from our friend Zany in Mississippi.

This will be the second Star Wars film to receive a PG-13 rating after Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. All other films have been PG.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will premiere worldwide on December 18th, after various early premieres in the preceding days.

Are you excited that the movie will have grittier elements? Let us know in the comments!

In Sweden its Rated 15+ on the ticket by default. But the real rating is not yet set.

I love it. Please be true.

i told my 11 and 10 year old daughter that the rating is inconsequential to me whether they get to see it. they're coming, and that's it. barring an R rating (which ... yah, right!), they'll be coming with my wife and me to the movie at least twice.

I don't mind the rating at all.

My son is well under 13, but he's seen Sith so there's no WAY he's not seeing this one!

I wish it was PG.

We don't let our kids watch anything PG-13. We all love Star Wars, but they'll have to wait. I'm bummed it's not PG. Gritty does not make me happy.

Sad to hear...no longer makes it a family movie.

I think you have to take into consideration the way the movie rating system has evolved in the past 25+ years. The reality is that the entire original trilogy would probably have been rated PG-13 by today's standards. The MPAA has frankly gotten lazy and they default to PG-13 for live action with few exceptions. Comparing the original trilogy's rating to the new movie is like comparing apples to oranges. But I can draw an apples to apples comparison between my 6 year old son's excitement for this movie to come out and the excitement I had in the summer of 1983 when I saw ROTJ 6 times in the theater. I wouldn't dream of depriving my son of the chance to build childhood memories that will truly last a lifetime.

I am really wanting a PG rating so that I can take my 7 and 5 year old kids. The PG-13 rating has not been confirmed by the MPAA. According to the Star Wars site, the film has not yet been rated. http://www.starwars.com/the-force-awakens/trailers/

I guess I can still hold on to that slim hope that it will be PG in the end.

I am sorry, I'm not trying to stir up a thread about a Star Wars movie rating but I grew as a child able to see movies of all types. As a young child I saw numerous R rated films with violence and language. I was mostly shielded from movies with explicit sexual content. To say this is not a family film because of a PG-13 rating I think is a bit ludicrous. I grew up fine and would never deprive my children from seeing a film series that has defined generations. I'm not here to judge parenting styles, I do not know anyone else's family situation but my own. It's Star Wars! Revenge of the Sith was a much better film with the PG-13 rating. Setting the dark tone of the Empire throughout the film made it come alive. Personally films that back down from R to PG-13 are always let downs for their lack of true concept and realism. A Die Hard film...rated PG-13? BORING.

Understand some people want a more adult movie. I wish they were coming out with 2 versions so that people who want to bring younger children had a choice for a more family friendly version.

You got your data backwards. Pg 13 movies from 20 years ago would be pg now. Movies today at a comparable rating are much more violent.

Are you kidding me? Well how old are they. Seriously make an exception for Christmas if they're like 8 and up its fine. R I'd totally understand though.

Pg13 still is...

For those concerned about PG-13 wait until some parental guides come out or go see the film and decide if you think it is ok for your kid. Every kid is diffrent. Star Wars for the most part is not aimed at young children and PG is not a rating for 5 year olds.

Being in Canada a PG-13 movie in the U.S. is always rated PG here. My 7 year old has watched Gardians of the Galaxy and Jurrasic World. However she has not watched "The Dark Knight" and won't for another year or two. Basically parents have the tools through IMDB and Common Sense media to make an informed decision. The fact Star Wars is Disney now I would expect the rating to be based on violence. With VFX today things look more real and can be more intense. Add in watching the movie in IMAX or a AVX 3D theatre the movie may be too intense for some kids. That is just a reality.

Mi kids love Star Wars. There was no way I was going to take away the chance of seeing TFA in the theatre with them. My three year old son, and five year old daughter loved it. Every now and again I'd look over at my five year old, she was just beaming. So glad I shared this with them.
