Although he's no longer directly involved in the production of Star Wars movies, George Lucas' influence is still felt throughout all the new and upcoming projects set in the galaxy far, far away. Jon Favreau, the writer and executive producer of The Mandalorian, recently revealed in an interview with GQ Middle East the advice that Lucas gave him about working on Star Wars. Favreau revealed that one of the key things Lucas told him was to always remember who the primary audience for Star Wars.
Favreau said, "We had a long talk with each other. One thing [George Lucas] said to me was, ’remember, Jon, the real
audience for all stories and all myths is the kids that are coming of
age’, because he’s really a Joseph Campbell adherent."
Lucas always envisioned Star Wars as a modern sort of fairy tale for kids back when he was making the Original Trilogy back in the 1970s and carried that forward with the prequels in the early 2000s. And though Star Wars sometimes skews a little older and darker, something that it seems The Mandalorian will do, it's important to remember the series' roots and primary audience. Favreau, for his part, seems to understand this. In that same interview, he went on to say,
"We enjoy the stories as adults, but really, storytelling is about imparting the wisdom of the previous generations on to the children who are becoming adults, and giving them a context for how to behave and how to learn the lessons of the past without making the mistakes on their own."
Lucas visited the set of The Mandalorian during the filming of season one last year, and posed for pictures with Favreau and Dave Filoni (another executive producer on the series, who also worked extensively with Lucas on The Clone Wars animated series).
The first season of The Mandalorian will debut when Disney+ launches on November 12th. Fans at Star Wars Celebration back in April were treated to a short preview of the series, and fans attending D23 Expo next month will be able to check out another preview for the series. A second season of the series is also in development, which Favreau confirmed earlier this month.
The
series is set in the outer rim of the galaxy, following the fall of the Empire in Return of the Jedi, and stars Pedro Pascal as the Mandalorian, Gina Carano as Cara Dune,
and Carl Weathers as Greef Carga. They will be joined by Giancarlo Esposito, Werner Herzog, Nick Nolte, Emily Swallow, and Omid Abtahi. The Mandalorian is written and executive produced by Jon Favreau, with episodes directed by Dave Filoni, Taika Waititi, Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow, and Rick Famuyiwa. Season one debuts on Disney+ on November 12th.
