We may not know too much about Star Wars: The Mandalorian right now, but one thing just became abundantly clear: it's getting a second season. While we anxiously await the premiere of the first set of episodes on Disney+ in November, writer and executive producer Jon Favreau has now confirmed that production on season two of The Mandalorian has already begun.
First off, while appearing on a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel LIVE to promote his current film The Lion King, Favreau spoke briefly about The Mandalorian. He mentions that he is is currently writing season two of the series, in addition to giving a brief description of the plot and proudly showing off his Boba Fett socks. And in addition to that, Collider also caught up with Jon Favreau and were able to glean even more details from him about The Mandalorian. He again confirms he is writing the second season while discussing his overall professional relationship with Disney:
“I keep getting pulled deeper into the orbit of Disney, but fortunately the stuff that Disney’s working on is the stuff that I love. I wanted to do a Star Wars TV show like The Mandalorian and pitched it to them and they were very open to it. I even wrote four episodes before I even was hired to do it because I was excited as a fan to see what these stories might be and see if they were interested in doing what I was interested in, which they were. And I was actually writing Season 2 this morning before I came here.”
Favreau also goes into more detail about the innovative filmmaking techniques utilized for The Mandalorian, and specifically that pre-production for season two of the series has begun:
“In The Mandalorian because we’re doing live-action production, we’re using the Epic game engine and using that to do real-time in-camera visual effects. So if you visited the set for The Mandalorian you would’ve seen a completely video-wall wrapped stage and we were in there filming the characters in the foreground, and oftentimes either blue screen or full digital versions of set extensions in the background with Parallax, because the positional data of the camera was informing the backgrounds, so it was like a translight that had perspective. So that allowed us to have environments—as long as we could build them digitally and put enough work into planning it, we could have the game engine be used for creating effects in a timeframe that allows us to get a TV season done... But all of that requires us to use the same v-cam techniques in pre-production on The Mandalorian so that we know exactly what we need to see. So if you visited the set now as we’re starting to get into Season 2, it looks a lot like the set of The Lion King as we’re planning how we’re gonna shoot it ahead of time.”
This news comes alongside the announcement that a special preview of The Mandalorian will be revealed at Disney's D23 Expo next month. As we await that preview, as well as the series' premiere itself, it's exciting to know Favreau and company are already planning to continue the story of The Mandalorian into the foreseeable future.

The first episode of The Mandalorian will premiere on Disney+ when it launches on November 12th. The series stars Pedro Pascal(Game Of Thrones) in the title role, Gina Carano(Deadpool) as Cara Dune, Carl Weathers (Predator) as Greef Carga, Nick Nolte (Affliction) , Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), and Omid Abtahi (American Gods). The series is executive produced by Jon Favreau, Colin Wilson, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni.
