Lupita Nyong'o Doesn't Know Yet If She Will Be In 'Episode IX'

One character who a major role in The Force Awakens, but didn't factor into The Last Jedi as much was Maz Kanata.  Maz was key to Rey and Finn's stories in The  Force Awakens, but in the sequel her role was reduced to a glorified cameo passing on information to Finn, Poe, and Rose about how to fin the master code breaker. With Maz's creator, director JJ Abrams, being back for Episode IX, some have speculated that we will see her play a more important role in that film.

While fans are waiting to hear any news about the character, the actress who plays Maz is also waiting for those answers. Lupita Nyong'o was asked about Episode IX in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter while promoting Black Panther. She said, "I don't know yet. I'll know soon."

She also spoke about what it was like to read the script for The Force Awakens for the first time while on vacation in Morocco, saying,

"An assistant was flown to my hotel, with a script in a locked contraption. It looked like something out of Star Wars. And he made me sign something and gave me instructions. I had a certain number of hours to read the script, and the assistant was just waiting, waiting in Morocco for me to finish reading so that he could put it in that locked thing and take it back."

Hopefully we'll see Maz back in a meaningful role in Episode IX.  The character had a great introduction in The Force Awakens and, while her cameo was fun, her appearance in The Last Jedi left something to be desired.

Star Wars Episode IX hits theaters on December 21st, 2019.
