While most of the world is focused on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which opened in US theaters today, behind the scenes the focus is already shifting to its sequel. Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed yesterday that writer/director JJ Abrams would be pitching him the story of Star Wars Episode IX during a meeting today. Iger revealed yesterday during a Q&A with shareholders regarding the announcement that Disney was purchasing 20th Century Fox for over $56 billion.
Star Wars Episode IX will pick up where Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi left off and conclude the sequel trilogy. Abrams, who also kicked off the sequel trilogy with The Force Awakens, was brought in to write (with Chris Terrio) and direct the film following the departure of Colin Trevorrow earlier this year. Abrams' previous film was met with high critical praise and went on to become the third highest gross movie of all time.
Star Wars Episode IX hits theaters of December 20th, 2019.
