After years of waiting, fans finally got to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi when it opened in theaters and the box office returns reflect that anticipation. The film opened to the second highest domestic preview night of all time, second only to 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. According to CNN Money, The Last Jedi brought in $45 million in US box offices on Thursday night (compared to The Force Awakens' $57 million). The film has also brought in $105 million worldwide thanks to the film opening over the past few days in overseas markets.
The Force Awakens made $248 million domestically in its opening weekend, before finishing with over $2 billion worldwide. The new film is projected to make $200 million domestically this weekend, but not to surpass the 2015 film. However it is expected to surpass Rogue One, which made $155 million on opening weekend and finished with over $1 billion worldwide. The Last Jedi is not expected to reach the same overall heights as The Force Awakens, but it will be interesting to see how high it gets.
