While you were watching the new behind the scenes reel for Star Wars: The Last Jedi that was unveiled at D23, you may have noticed a certain cute and cuddly creature mixed in amongst a plethora of amazing visuals. The bird-like creatures are actually called "Porgs" and they will apparently have a part to play in The Last Jedi.

Today, Dan Brooks on StarWars.com released an interview with the Lucasfilm Story Group's Pablo Hidalgo where he officially revealed the Porgs to the world. Hidalgo provides some fascinating details about the creatures, and reveals a concept sketch of the Porgs. You can view it below, along with an excerpt from the interview:

StarWars.com: So Pablo, right now all we know is that these little guys are called porgs. What else can you tell us about them that won’t make Rian Johnson ask for StarWars.com to be shut down and erased from the Internet?

Pablo Hidalgo: Porgs are native to Ahch-To, and can be found dwelling along the cliffs of the island where Luke and Rey are. In many ways, they’re the Star Wars version of puffins. They build nests. They can fly. Their babies are called porglets.

StarWars.com: In the D23 behind-the-scenes reel, we see that porgs (or at least a porg) were made through practical effects.

Pablo Hidalgo: The porgs are realized through a variety of effects, depending on what’s needed. Sometimes they’re puppets, with the puppeteers digitally removed from the shot. Other times, they’re entirely CG.

You can read the full interview over at StarWars.com!

The Porgs will make their big screen debut when Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th.
