Ever since the announcement that Disney was purchasing Lucasfilm, fans have speculated that, in addition to the continuation of the saga (Episodes VII, VIII, and IX), that Disney would produce spin-off films based on other characters in the galaxy far, far away. Today, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed on CNBC that two spin-off films were in the works and that Lawrence Kasden (writer of The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi) and Simon Kinsberg (Producer of X-Men: First Class), both of whom are consultants on Episode VII, were working on them. Iger also stated that films would be released in the same time period as the sequel trilogy and that they were "derived from great Star Wars characters".
Speaking of great Star Wars characters, could the first of these stand alone films be centered around Yoda? Harry Knowles of Ain't it Cool News is reporting that the first of these Star Wars spin-off films will feature everybody's favourite green Jedi master in the staring role. Remember everything is just a rumor until it is confirmed by Lucasfilm or by Disney, however there are several factors that bode well for this rumor. First is the involvement of Lawrence Kasden in these Spin-off films. Kasden wrote The Empire Strikes Back, the film where we were first introduced to Yoda, and likely understands the character better than most due to this experience. Perhaps Kasden knows something about Yoda's back story from story meetings with George Lucas back in 1978 that he feels will lend itself to an excellent film. One thing is certain though, now that we know for sure that spin-off films are in the works, anything is possible.
