Ralph McQuarrie was a visionary conceptual designer and futurist responsible for the look of the original trilogy of Star Wars.
McQuarrie's artwork was such a strong influence on the look and feel of the original trilogy that some scenes from the films are virtually identical to the concept art provided by McQuarrie. He often went by the initials "RMQ", which he used as his signature. His concept art is featured in Battlestar Galactica, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Cocoon, and Jurassic Park. His work as the conceptual artist on the 1985 film Cocoon earned him the Academy Award for Visual Effects.
McQuarrie designed many of Star Wars' characters, including Darth Vader, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3PO and drew many concepts for the film's sets. It was McQuarrie who suggested that Vader wear a breathing apparatus.
McQuarrie's concept paintings, including such scenes as R2-D2 and C-3PO arriving on Tatooine, helped convince 20th Century Fox to fund Star Wars.
