Ron Howard Reveals McQuarrie Reference in the Han Solo Movie

By: Dominic Jones

Ron Howard, director of the upcoming untitled Han Solo movie, has been posting lots of fun tidbits and sneak peaks behind the scenes from the set ever since he took over from Phil Lord and Chris Miller as director back in June.  Today he posted a new image of what appears to be a potion of the set that features some sort of alien writing/symbols carved into stone.  Howard revealed that this is a reference to famed Star Wars designer Ralph McQuarrie, who designed many of the most iconic vehicles and characters for the original trilogy.  Howard then asked fans if anyone could translate what was being said.  Check it out below,

On This Day: June 13, 1929

By Ciaran Duggan,

American conceptual designer Ralph McQuarrie, who worked on many of the designs and aesthetics seen in the first Star Wars trilogy, was born on this day in 1929.

McQuarrie's artwork crafted the visual design of the entire Star Wars galaxy; both him and George Lucas helped to convince studios to fund the Star Wars project.

Tony Dyson, The Original R2-D2 Builder, Has Died

By: Benjamin Hart

It is unfortunate that we have some sad news to report today. Tony Dyson, whom Star Wars fans will know as the original R2-D2 builder, has died at the age of 68. While R2-D2 was conceptualized by the late Ralph McQuarrie, multiple versions of the Droid still had to be physically built for the production of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope in 1976. Lead special effects supervisor John Stears hired Dyson, who owned the White Horse Toy Company at the time, to construct the R2-D2s for the film. In five month's time he built eight Artoos; two that actor Kenny Baker could sit in and operate, several remote controlled versions, and one that was later used in The Empire Strikes Back for scene in which Artoo is spat out by the Dragonsnake on Dagobah.

Later. Dyson would do uncredited effects work on such films as Moonraker(1979) and Superman II(1981) and would later go on start the R2-D2 Builder's Club. Things came full circle recently as two members of the club, Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples, were hired by Lucasfilm to create droids for Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, as well as other upcoming films.

Bringing arguably the most famous robot of all time to life for the first time was a monumental accomplishment, and his legacy will continue to live on as Artoo and other Astromechs continue to grace the big screen forever. Our most sincere condolences go out to the family of Mr. Dyson.

More 'The Force Awakens' Action Figures Reveal New Characters

By: Benjamin Hart

As close as we are to the release of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, the leaks aren't stopping. It's been a while since we've gotten any reveals via new toys, and this newest one is quite intriguing. Our friends at Making Star Wars alerted us to a report by Jedi Temple Archives who got their hands on photos of two never before seen action figures that appear to reveal new character that will be appearing in Episode VII. Of course I should issue a minor SPOILER alert for the following if you'd rather not know anything prior to seeing the movie.

-
--
---
----
-----

The first is a figure for a hairy alien named "Hassak Thug."

Many have pointed to this piece of Ralph McQuarrie concept art from A New Hope as a possible inspiration. Others have even pointed out it's resemblance to Zeb Orellios from Star Wars Rebels.

Additionally, we have this figure two pack featuring a First Order Snowtrooper Officer and a Resistance pilot. The pilot is the most intriguing figure because it appears to be the character played by Greg Grunberg, who we've seen and heard a lot about before. He was previously rumored to be named Gorwyn, but the packaging reveals his name to be Snap Wexley. Interestingly Snap shares his surname with Norra and Temmin Wexley, two characters that appeared in the recent novel Star Wars: Aftermath, which is set just a few months following the events of Return Of The Jedi. Could there be a connection there? I would bet a good amount that there is.

I always enjoy leaks like this because it's just enough to enhance the viewing of the movie without really giving anything away about the plot. I can't wait to see both these characters and all the rest on the big screen when The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th!

Harrison Ford, Simon Pegg & More Discussed With EW

By: Benjamin Hart

Over the past few days Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican has been releasing pieces of his phenomenal interview with Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan discussing The Force Awakens. These articles have proven to be the most revealing feature we've seen from the film thus far, giving us brand new looks at some of the characters, revealing what made J.J. Abrams take the job of directing the first place, more details about Kylo Ren, character name origins and some news about the Han Solo Anthology film. They then continued on with more articles focused on Han Solo, Simon Pegg, production designer Rick Carter, and various other topics. Below we have collected a number of excerpt with the most interesting quotes from the interviews.

J.J. Abrams first spoke about Harrison Ford's on-set injury and his seemingly miraculous recovery:

“It was obviously a horrible experience that I wish had never happened for obvious reasons. But the truth is, once we knew that Harrison was going to be okay, we all realized this was this greatest gift to the movie, and I would think that any filmmaker would say, ‘If I could get a break after a month of shooting, for a few weeks, to recalibrate, I would take it.'... There are some places where he’s more active than he was prior to the accident. As you’ll see in the movie, he is running and doing more physical activity in this movie than I think anyone who knows he was injured would expect. Nothing was adjusted or lessened because of that accident. Even for Harrison, who is famously resilient and strong, he blew everyone’s minds.”

You can read about that further here.

They also spoke about the joint issues that Peter Mayhew has had with his knees, which have forced him to use a cane and a wheelchair in recent years. They confirm that another actor stepped in to don the iconic Wookiee fur in more strenuous, action oriented scenes. Still, Mayhew was the preferred actor to portray Chewbacca whenever he was able. Kathleen Kennedy spoke briefly about a moment off set when Mayhew and Ford reunited:

“We had a dinner and the whole cast was reunited just before we started shooting. I had no idea how close Peter and Harrison were. And when Harrison came into the room and Peter was sitting down, he just went over and gave him the biggest hug, and you could just see that there had been this incredible relationship between these two.”

Next, EW focused their attention on someone that's been getting who's been getting a lot of it lately: Simon Pegg. While Pegg himself was not available to comment, J.J. Abrams talked extensively about the actor's involvement in the film, and it's not what you think. Aside from playing an alien of some kind, as we saw in the Comic Con reel, Abrams says Pegg offered support to the writing team as well:

“I will say this in terms of Simon: while he won’t be recognizable in the movie, in all honesty, his role in this – not the performance or the character – but his support and friendship has been massively important and helpful in the process,” Abrams says, shifting from deadpan to sincere. “He was a wonderful partner in crime to kick the story around and ask questions and come up with ideas, and he was an incredibly helpful part of the process for all of us. I’m very grateful.”

“He was a sounding board. He would drop by the set because he wanted to, and when he could, he would help… We could talk about things, and he was a perfect combination of incredibly smart screenwriter, fan of the series, critical fan of the series, and friend of mine – but not just blindly supportive. He was an honest, critical friend. And he wasn’t so close to it that he became immune to things. He would come in with fresh eyes and very smart ideas. He’s one of a handful of people along the way that has been really priceless.”

Abrams was also asked about the rumor that Daniel Craig is playing a Stormtrooper, which he replied:

“I’ve been asked to say nothing by Her Majesty’s Secret Service.”

Click here to read more about Simon Pegg.

Additionally, Abrams discussed working with production designer Rick Carter:

“I was incredibly blessed to work with Rick Carter, who – beyond being a brilliant production designer – is a font of imagination and associations. He is able to make connections to things that no one else can see, and he has such a trove of references and life experience and images and design ideas.”

He also spoke about taking inspiration from the late, legendary Ralph McQuarrie:

“We both knew the importance of what McQuarrie had done, and how critical he was in creating the aesthetic of what we all know is Star Wars. We could have taken another path and said, ‘Okay, everything that we all know about Star Wars has been done; let’s go somewhere else and do something totally different,’ but when you’re lucky enough to inherit the history of this world that we know, there should be a continuum.”

You can read that article here!

And lastly, J.J. Abrams talked about communicating with the fans and the various reveals we've seen so far:

"They’re all, in a way, pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that is, little by little, coming together in some form. We’re doing the best we can to simply finish this movie, and make it as good as it can be, and at the same time, dole out moments and characters and images that will be in line with what Lucas has been doing for so many years.”

He was also asked about Supreme Leader Snoke. Of course he wouldn't give any details about the character, but he had high praise for the actor playing him, Andy Serkis:

“I will say that Andy Serkis is like working with someone who is an historically great actor. He is the kindest, sweetest, most lovely guy, so it’s not that he puts on any airs of being pretentious or anything at all, but he’s simply so damn good, that when I’m working with him, I feel like I’m working with someone who is, you know, like a Charles Laughton, or someone who is just so extraordinary. Then there’s the whole matter of how he incorporates technology in a way that no one has seen or done… There are many levels to his genius, but he is certainly a genius.”

You can read more of Abrams thoughts on that, as well as working with Ben Burtt, by clicking here!

More Ralph McQuarrie Influence Discovered In 'The Force Awakens'

By: Benjamin Hart

Some of the most iconic Star Wars imagery ever comes from the legendary Ralph McQuarrie. The late concept artist established the look of the Galaxy far, far away before anything was even filmed, and his artwork continues to be used as inspiration for designs in new Star Wars stories. Most are aware of the McQuarrie influence that has existed in the new animated series Star Wars Rebels, but another new Star Wars production has also been paying homage to the artist in less than obvious ways.

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens is slated for release on December 18th, and over the course of it's production, through set photos and trailers, we have uncovered several instances of Ralph McQuarrie's artwork influencing the new film, some very recently.

First off we have concept art for an archway that was created for Jabba's Palace in Return Of The Jedi. It ended up appearing on the Planet Jakku in The Force Awakens in leaked set photos and subsequently in the first teaser trailer:

Also spotted in the teaser was Rey's costume, which bares a striking resemblance to early concept sketches for Luke:

BB-8's design also appears to draw inspiration from an early concept for R2-D2:

And just yesterday the folks at The Replica Prop Forum appear to have uncovered another link to the past in some new Episode VII designs. A few weeks back at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim, Lucasfilm revealed a collection of costumes and props at a special exhibit. In it, fans were able to get up close looks at Finn, Rey and Kylo's Ren's costume, and officially revealed brand new armor for a Snowtrooper and Flametrooper. The Snowtrooper in particular featured an insignia that is directly taken from a some Ralph McQuarrie concept art for Hoth:

It's also worth noting that the Snowtrooper's backpack also looks similar to the one in the concept art:

It's very awesome to see Ralph McQuarrie's art live on in this manner! It's comforting to know that new Star Wars creators are still looking to the past for inspiration. Have you noticed any McQuarrie influence in The Force Awakens aside from the instances listed here? Please let us know in the comments below!

First Look At Darth Vader in 'Star Wars Rebels'

By: Benjamin Hart

Last week we learned that the Dark Lord of the Sith himself, Darth Vader, would be making an appearance on Star Wars Rebels much sooner than we expected, and voiced by James Earl Jones, no less. Anticipation is running high as fans wonder what Vader will look like in the animation style of Rebels. Well now it appears that we're getting our first sneak peak at the animated half man, half machine courtesy of our friends at The WolfPack Podcast. They are reporting that during a Toy Story short film, which aired on ABC, the Vader scene, or a portion of it, was shown. You can check out a screenshot of the of the scene below. And of course, SPOILERS if you want to hold out for when the scene premieres with the re-airing of Spark Of Rebellion on ABC on October 26th.

It appears this design of Vader in Rebels will very much be informed by the artwork of the late, legendary Original Trilogy concept artist Ralph McQuarrie. This falls in line with design of the rest of the series which is also McQuarrie inspired and, as the creators describe it; "A Ralph McQuarrie painting come to life." The resemblance is unmistakable when compared to the classic McQuarrie concept painting for Luke and Vader below:

So, what do you think? Is this look suitable for Vader? Or is it too much of a departure from his infamous design. Let us know in the comments below!

Update: The good folks over at From 4-LOM to Zuckuss have shared video of scene, which is featured at the end of a short TV spot for Rebels:

Star Wars 1977-1996 | Ralph McQuarrie

Ralph McQuarrie was a visionary conceptual designer and futurist responsible for the look of the original trilogy of Star Wars.
McQuarrie's artwork was such a strong influence on the look and feel of the original trilogy that some scenes from the films are virtually identical to the concept art provided by McQuarrie. He often went by the initials "RMQ", which he used as his signature. His concept art is featured in Battlestar Galactica, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Cocoon, and Jurassic Park. His work as the conceptual artist on the 1985 film Cocoon earned him the Academy Award for Visual Effects.

McQuarrie designed many of Star Wars' characters, including Darth VaderChewbaccaR2-D2 and C-3PO and drew many concepts for the film's sets. It was McQuarrie who  suggested that Vader wear a breathing apparatus.
McQuarrie's concept paintings, including such scenes as R2-D2 and C-3PO arriving on Tatooine, helped convince 20th Century Fox to fund Star Wars.
