Ever since the cast of The Force Awakens was revealed back in 2014 (before the film even had a title), fans have been wondering why Billy Dee Williams wasn't a part of the sequel trilogy. Lando fans were dealt a further blow when it was revealed that Williams wouldn't be back for The Last Jedi either.  Lando wound up being the only major character from the original trilogy to be not be played by their original actor in their first appearance in Disney era of Star Wars, with Donald Glover playing the part in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Then, in July 2018, fans of Williams and Lando alike could finally celebrate his return when it was announced that he would be back for The Rise of Skywalker.  The film's director and co-writer, JJ Abrams discussed bringing Lando back in the upcoming film in a new interview with Vanity Fair.

Abrams revealed that he had originally wanted to bring back Lando for The Force Awakens, saying,

"Having Lando back in Star Wars is something that [cowriter] Larry Kasdan and I wanted to do in The Force Awakens, just as much as I wanted to have Luke training Reyd. I was so excited about things that we just realized we could never, ever get to."

He also spoke about what it was like having Williams on set, telling Vanity Fair,

"Having his spirit and his personality, and his swagger, and that fucking smile, which is the greatest thing that, maybe, God ever made…He’s just, you just can’t deny the guy. Getting to see him in a scene with our characters, it just feels so right."
