One of the big attractions of Star Wars: The Last Jedi was seeing the continuation of Luke Skywalker's story for the first time in thirty years. And the film delivered on that big time! Writer/director Rian Johnson and actor Mark Hamill took part in a live Q&A with Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican where they spoke about the way Luke's story ended in the film, how some of these conclusions were reached and how they reacted to the scene where Luke seemingly becomes one with the Force.
Johnson spoke about the decision to kill Luke Skywalker, something he agonized over, saying, "I had huge hesitance. I was terrified. It was a growing sense of dread when I realized this was going to make sense in that chapter."
Hamill, for his part, seems open to the possibility of returning to the role in the future, perhaps as a Force ghost (like Luke's mentors did), saying, "I’m just still holding on to the line, ‘See you around, kid.’ I can be in Episode Nine! I might consider catering the film just so I can hang out."
As for why Luke had to die, Johnson explained,
"I think the hero’s journey of Luke Skywalker concluded in Return of the Jedi. This [trilogy] is the hero’s journey of Rey, and Finn, and Poe. The [ongoing] story of Luke is one that has to play in tandem with that of Rey."
Personally, the fact that Luke died in the film still hasn't really hit me. Perhaps it was overshadowed by the real world loss of Carrie Fisher last and the knowledge that Hamill could always return as a Force ghost in future instalments (whereas this was Fisher's last film regardless of Leia's fate). Regardless, the conclusion we got to his story felt like a poignant and fitting one. (Though I'll still hold out hope for a Luke appearance in Episode IX).
