Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul star Giancarlo Esposito is set to join the galaxy far, far away this November in The Mandalorian, the first live action Star Wars series on the new Disney+ streaming service. As with most information about the series, details about Esposito's character remain largely hidden, however the actor did tease the character (and his allegiances) in a new interview with Slashfilm.
The actor described his still-nameless character by saying, "In a way, you might call him an
underworld character. You may also look at him as a
savior, as someone who might bring back some order to the world after
it’s all collapsed."
Esposito's character appeared briefly in the teaser trailer that was shown to fans at Star Wars Celebration in April (and still hasn't been officially released online). In it he appeared to be some kind of Imperial leader, at one point he is seen leading a pair of Death Troopers and can be heard saying, "Burn them out" (unsurprisingly, the next shot in the trailer was a trooper with a flame thrower). He is later seen piloting a TIE fighter.
The Mandalorian is set in the outer rim of the galaxy, following the collapse of the Empire in Return of the Jedi. So the idea of remaining Imperials presenting themselves as the ones to restore order to a lawless portion of the Galaxy, one that is beyond the reach of the still growing New Republic, is a very intriguing concept, and one that the show seems to interested in exploring. In that same trailer, Werener Herzog's character asks the question, "Compare Imperial rule to what is happening now, is the world more peaceful since the revolution?"
The Mandalorian seems poised to ask the question about what happens between the fall of one regime and the rise of another, something Star Wars hasn't addressed in a meaningful way before. The show looks to be showing the ways in which the remains of the Empire and the criminal underworld will intertwine in the regions of the galaxy that the New Republic hasn't gone yet. Which likely has something to do with why Esposito describes his character, who appears to be an Imperial, as "an underworld character".
In addition to Esposito and Herzog, the series stars Pedro Pascal as the Mandalorian, Gina Carano as Cara Dune, and Carl Weathers as Greef Carga. They will be joined by Nick Nolte, Emily Swallow, and Omid Abtahi. The Mandalorian is written and executive produced by Jon Favreau, with episodes directed by Dave Filoni, Taika Waititi, Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow, and Rick Famuyiwa. Season one debuts on Disney+ on November 12th.
