The news came fast and furious out of Star Wars Celebration Chicago, with new trailer launches, TV previews, video game snake peaks, and so much more. One story that flew somewhat under the radar, was the announcement of "Project Luminous" from Lucasfilm publishing. The announcement was made at the end of the "Lucasfilm Publishing Writers Roundtable" panel on Monday, where it was revealed that authors Cavan Scott, Claudia Gray, Justina Ireland, Daniel José Older and Charles Soule would all be contributing to this project. Outside of that, nothing is known.
The project is clearly some sort of massive collaboration, but beyond that it's anyone's guess. Some have speculated that it may a celebration of 40 years of The Empire Strikes Back, along the lines of the From A Certain Point Of View collection of short stories that was released in 2017 to celebrate 40 years of A New Hope. The "title" of the project appears to be a nod to Yoda's line, "Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter", from that film.
There is also the chance that this is a multi-author series of books, along the lines of the New Jedi Order, Legacy of the Force, and Fate of the Jedi series from the old Star Wars Legends line of now non-canonical books. In those series, there would be multiple authors who would write books (three for LOTF and FOTJ, and fourteen for NJO) that together would make up a larger story (there were nine total books for both LOTF and FOTJ, and nineteen total books for NJO).
Update: Author Cavan Scott recently posted to his website about the project, and while he didn't reveal what it was he may have left a few hints. He revealed that he, along with his fellow authors, were invited up to Skywalker Ranch (twice!) to work on the project together. About the experience, he writes, "Both Skywalker retreats featured days of intense workshops where we came
up with new ideas and broke story, the most exhilarating writer’s room
in the world."
He later adds,
"What is it? Well, time will tell, with more details becoming
available in the weeks and months ahead. Project Luminous is easily the
biggest thing I’ve ever been involved with, and I couldn’t ask to be
part of a better team. It really is a joint effort, the five of us
coming together to conjure up something new and exciting. There isn’t
really much more I can say, other than repeat the quote we used to
introduce the project at Celebration, familiar lines from one of my
favourite Jedi: 'The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field, created by all living things…'"
This sound to me like a multi-author series of books, but we'll have to wait and see.
