Back in July of last year Lucasfilm announced the full cast of Star Wars: Episode IX. Included in the official announcement was an off hand proclamation that the film would be "the final installment of the Skywalker saga". Since then fans have speculated about that statement and debated how literally it should be taken.
Now that principal photography has ceased for Episode IX, some cast members have been out and about to discuss the film. One of which is Poe Dameron actor Oscar Isaac, who recently appeared on the Today show to promote his newest film Triple Frontier. As to be expected, Star Wars quickly became one of the talking points and Isaac briefly shared his impressions of Episode IX:
“It is the end of the entire Skywalker saga. Nine stories, and this is the culmination of the thing. I think what J.J. [Abrams] has done, and really the whole Lucas(film) team, is going to be incredibly fulfilling. It’s also special for us because you get to learn a lot more things about these characters.”

For an extra bit of fun, Oscar appeared in a recent installment of Wired's Google Autocomplete Interview alongside Triple Frontier co-star, and the man behind the mask of The Mandalorian, Pedro Pascal. During the interview Isaac casually comments that he was the one who convinced Pascal to take the title role in the upcoming Disney+ series:
As previously noted, the idea that Star Wars: Episode IX is going to be the "final" chapter of the numerical films, which have been officially deemed "The Skywalker Saga", is not a new one. The mention of it in the initial casting announcement wasn't an accident, and it will most likely be a huge part of the marketing for Episode IX. What I find most interesting about this is Oscar's comments, and the fact that his experience during production makes him believe that this film will be climax of "nine stories", as he says. This seems to interface with comments filmmaker Kevin Smith made several months ago after he visited the set, in which he suggested he saw things from "all Star Wars movies".
Obviously I'm not buying that Episode IX will be the "last" Skywalker film. Return Of The Jedi and Revenge Of The Sith were both marketed as "final" Star Wars installments, but we all know how that turned out. I'd be willing to bet Star Wars: Episode X(10) will come to pass eventually, but in the meantime I can't help pondering these comments. Is the supposed finality of Episode IX simply a marketing ploy, or does Oscar Isaac's words mean that the film will truly be a love letter to the previous 8(or 10) films of the saga? Obviously, I'm hoping for the latter.
While the Sequel Trilogy so far has had more than its fair share of attachments to the Original Trilogy, many fans are hoping for some connections to the Prequel Trilogy and more. While some subtle nods would suffice, myself and many other fans are holding out for some major connectivity. I'm personally hoping for an appearance of Hayden Christensen as a Force Ghost of Anakin Skywalker, which would certainly cap off the saga that has largely focused on his rise, fall, redemption and legacy.
