Matt Smith Denies Having A Role In 'Episode IX'

Back in August 2018, it was reported that former Dr. Who and The Crown star Matt Smith had been cast in a "key" role in Star Wars Episode IX.  There were no details about the role at the time and it turns out there may have been a good reason. Smith was recently interviewed by The LA Times and the actor denied the reports that he would be appearing in the film.  He told the Times, "As far as I can tell, I’m definitely not."

The reports of Smith's involvement was reported by Variety, who have an excellent track record when it comes to breaking casting news (among the casting stories they've broken are Adam Driver, Diego LunaKeri Russel, and more), so there was good reason to believe that he was really in the film. It also came on the heels of the reports that Dominic Monaghan was cast in the film, which has officially been confirmed, and many have spoken about the two actors casting in the film in tandem.

Of course, there is always a chance that Smith may be using some Obi-Wan Kenobi-esque, "from a certain point of view" logic.  The story in the LA Times points out several times that Smith has considerable experience with keeping secrets for a production from his time on Dr. Who, as well as his upcoming role in Morbius (the upcoming Spider-Man spin-off from Sony).  And recall, Daniel Craig once denied (rather aggressively) having a role in The Force Awakens, and look how that turned out.  So there's always a chance that there's more going on here than Smith can admit.

Star Wars Episode IX hit theaters on December 20th, 2019.  The film is directed by JJ Abrams, with a script by Abrams and Chris Terio.  The film stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams, Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Naomi Ackie, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie Fisher.
