Report: 'Episode IX' Is Set One Year After 'The Last Jedi' (Updated)

As we approach the release of Star Wars: Episode IX, which is now less than a year away, one of the most speculated about aspects is the film's timeline of events. Episode IX will be succeeding The Last Jedi, a film that defied convention and was set just moments after The Force Awakens left off. This has led to some debate regarding Episode IX and whether or not it will pick up right where The Last Jedi left off, or jump forward in time.

Now it appears we have we have our answer. The most recent issue of Empire Magazine featured a piece on Episode IX as part of their 2019 preview. The article includes a brief mention Finn actor John Boyega, explaining that Boyega has revealed when Episode IX is set:

"John Boyega has confirmed the film take place roughly one year after the events of The Last Jedi..."

The full article from Empire Magazine was shared on Twitter by @starwarsstuff, which you can view below:

UPDATE: John Boyega himself has now chimed in on this piece of news, seemingly calling into question the report by Empire Magazine:

Obviously this casts some doubt on Empire's original report , but doesn't completely debunk it either. On Empire's part, it could simply be a misunderstanding or a mistake in reporting. Or perhaps the report is right, and as John says, he just doesn't remember the interview(which would be understandable). Being that Empire did not provide a direct quote from Boyega makes judging this information difficult. For now, it's probably best to take this new with a grain of salt until it's official confirmed by Disney or Lucasfilm.

A year gap between Episodes VIII and IX seems to make sense, based on what little we know about the sequel. At the end of The Last Jedi the Resistance was left incredibly vulnerable with only a handful its member left aboard the Millennium Falcon. Revisiting the good guys a year later after they've had time to gather their forces would be incredibly interesting. Also, I can't help but wonder what the First Order will look like after a year under the command of Supreme Leader Kylo Ren.

Star Wars: Episode IX hit theaters on December 20th, 2019.  The film stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Naomi Ackie, Dominic Monaghan, Anthony Daniels, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, and Carrie Fisher. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams, with a script by Abrams and Chris Terio.
