New Footage From 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Screened at CinemaCon

With just over a month until Lucasfilm releases Solo: A Star Wars Story in theaters, the studio debuted a new preview clip from the film at CinemaCon, the annual event National Association of Theatre Owners hold in Las Vegas.  The clip from the film features the first meeting of Han Solo (played by Alden Ehrenreich) and Lando Calrissian (played by Donald Glover).  The duo are introduced by Qi'Ra (Emilia Clarke) and their first interaction involves a card game.  The scene was described by Anthony D'Alessandro for Deadline, who writes,

"In the clip Emilia Clarke’s Qi’ra leads Han and Chewie into a cantina that’s in shambles situated on a snowy planet. She boasts about how Lando won his ship playing Sabaack, a card game, and Han is hardly threatened by that. Han then begins to beat Lando hand by hand until the Captain wagers the Millennium Falcon. “I can take him, let me at him,” says Han. Donald Glover sounds precisely like Billy Dee Williams. “Everything you heard about me is true,” Lando tells Han while warning him “You might want to quit while you’re ahead.” The clip goes to black before it’s revealed who wins (and we know who that is)."

It sounds like Han will win the Millennium Falcon from Lando in their first meeting.  Of course, there's always the possibility that director Ron Howard and screenwriters Lawrence and Jon Kasdan are pulling a little bit of a bait-and-switch and Lando wins the card game in the clip and gets to keep the Falcon for the duration of the scene (only to have Han win it later in the film--perhaps in a less than totally honest way).

Hopefully this scene gets released online for fans to enjoy.  If not, we'll see in theaters in 30 days.

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25th, 2018 and stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) as Han Solo, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi'Ra, Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as Tobias Beckett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-37, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, and Paul Bettany (The Avengers) as Dryden Vos.  The film is directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), with a script by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and his son Jon Kasdan (The First Time).
