Ever since the idea of a young Han Solo movie was first suggested, some fans have wondered how such a movie could be made without Harrison Ford in the lead role. Even though the film is being made without him, the creative team was keen to get his thoughts on certain aspects of the film. Both director Ron Howard and producer Kathleen Kennedy spoke to Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican about how Harrison influenced the film and what advice he had.
Last spring, pictures of Ford meeting with Solo star, Alden Ehrenreich (who is taking over the role of Han) made their way online. Kennedy shared some details about what Ford told Ehrenreich, saying,
"What [Ford] did so beautifully for Alden was he talked a lot about what he remembered when he first read Star Wars,
and what George had done with Han. Who the character was and the
conversations he had for so many years with George about how that
character developed."
As for Ehrenreich's recollection of the meeting, the star said Ford told him to say, "Tell them I told you everything you needed to know, and that you can’t tell anyone."
As for director Ron Howard, he has a history with Ford, going back to George Lucas' 1973 film American Graffiti which Howard starred in and Ford had a supporting role. Howard told EW that he reached out to Ford after he was hired in unusual circumstances, replacing Phil Lord and Chris Miller after several months of shooting and then reshooting much of the film. Howard explained that Ford shared with him his impression of who Han is, saying,
"He said that Han is always torn between that sense that he was, in a
way, an orphan, and therefore both yearned for connection with people
and struggled with it at the same time. I thought that was pretty
interesting."
Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25th, 2018 and stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) as Han Solo, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi'Ra, Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as Beckett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-3K, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, and Paul Bettany (The Avengers) as Dryden Vos. The film is directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), with a script by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and his son Jon Kasdan (The First Time).
