Alden Ehrenreich Talks 'Solo: A Star Wars Story'

There's no deny that Alden Ehrenreich has a big vest to fill.  The young actor is taking over the role of Han Solo from Harrison Ford, who made the character iconic in the original trilogy and then reprised the role in 2015 for The Force Awakens.  Ehrenreich is set to make his debut as young Han (before he met Luke Skywalker and Ben Kenobi in the Cantina) in May in Solo: A Star Wars StoryHe sat down recently with Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican to talk about how the Han we see in Solo is different from the one we meet in A New Hope.  The interview was released in advance of the cover story about Solo in an upcoming issue of EW.

Ehrenreich said,
"I think the main thing that’s different is that the Han we meet in this film is more of an idealist, he has certain dreams that he follows, and we watch how it affects him as those dreams meet new realities, realities that are harder and more challenging than he’d expected."

He elaborated further about what Han's dream is, saying,
"I can’t say exactly, but it definitely involves independence, and calling your own shots. I thought the Kasdans did a wonderful job of kind of retroactively coming up with what kind of background would lead him to becoming the character we all know."

He also teased what Han and Lando's relation ship will be like (Lando will be played by Donald Glover in Solo), saying,
"That’s very hard to answer without giving things away, but I will say that their relationship is many different things. As it is when you see them in the originals."

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25th, 2018 and stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) as Han Solo, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi'Ra, Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as Beckett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) asL3-3K, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, and Paul Bettany (The Avengers) as Dryden Vos.  The film is directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), with a script by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and his son Jon Kasdan (The First Time).
