One of the biggest surprises of the marketing for Solo: A Star Wars Story has been the redesigned Millennium Falcon. When we first see the Falcon in A New Hope, it has clearly seen better days (in the words of Luke Skywalker, "What a piece of junk!") What we didn't release until now is just how much nicer it used to be. The trailers, and subsequent still images, released have given us a look at what the Falcon looked like when it was owned by Lando Calrissian.
Solo co-writer Jon Kasdan explained to Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican,
"Where Han gave it a certain shabby coolness and a dinged up quality that reflected where he was at that point in his life, this
Falcon reflects its owner very clearly in its shape and aesthetic and
his needs, even if those needs be a little more space to entertain."
Kasdan also clarified that this is not a brand new Millennium Falcon, but rather one that has already been in use for decades and been modified several times.
As for why Han doesn't keep the Millennium Falcon looking good the way Lando did, young Han Solo actor Alden Ehrenreich said,
"It’s safer in the galaxy to fly something that looks like a piece of
junk. People underestimate you — especially if you’re up to no good. Kinda like how you’re more likely to get pulled
over if you’re driving a Lamborghini."
Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25th, 2018 and stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) as Han Solo, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi'Ra, Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as Beckett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-37, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, and Paul Bettany (The Avengers) as Dryden Vos. The film is directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), with a script by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and his son Jon Kasdan (The First Time).
