The late Carrie Fisher won her second Grammy award tonight in the Best Spoken Word category, winning over some tough competition which included Bruce Springsteen, Bernie Sanders, and Neil Degrasse Tyson. Fisher won for her performance narrating her book The Princess Diarist, which reflected on the early and later stages of career and featured excerpts from the diaries she kept during the production of the original Star Wars movie in 1977. The book was released in November 2016, just over a month before she died after suffering a heart attack on a flight home from the UK where she had been promoting the book.
Reactions celebrating the news poured in on social media from Fisher's family, friends, and colleagues, including her daughter Billie Lourd (who posted on Instagram using emojis to spell out words the way Fisher used to on Twitter), her dog Gary's account, and her Star Wars twin brother Mark Hamill. "No one's ever really gone," Luke Skywalker tells General Leia in The Last Jedi and Fisher's win tonight is another reminder of that. Even though Carrie is no longer with us, her work lives on to be enjoyed by generations to come. Fans that haven't read The Princess Diarist yet, should definitely do so. The book is a raw recollection of what it was like on the set of the original film, as well as Fishers (unexpectedly) final reflections on what her life became afterwards.
