SPOILER ALERT!
Following the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens two years ago one of the questions fans were asking was: why wasn't Captain Phasma in it more. Phasma, who was played by Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie, had been such a major part of the promotion for the 2015 film and then she had so little screen time. More was promised from the character in The Last Jedi and the film definitely delivered on that (though some fans still feel the character could have been used more). However, it now seems unlikely that the character can return for Episode IX seeing as she lost her duel with Finn and fell into a fiery explosion.
The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson spoke about the character's final moments, specifically when we see her eye through her broken helmet, during a special live Q&A hosted by Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican. He revealed that it was actually Rey actress, Daisy Ridley, who suggested that it be Gwendoline Christie's eye. Johnson said,
"It seemed like a really striking thing to just glimpse the humanity
behind it. Originally, we were like, 'Should it be kind
of monstrous? What should be behind there?' I think we were talking about it and it was Daisy [Ridley] actually who
said it should just be Gwendoline’s beautiful, piercing eye. Just this perfect blue eye behind this metal monster. I loved
that image."
The shot of Phasma's eye seen through the mask is such a powerful beat in the thrilling fight between Finn and Phasma. I can't help but think that Johnson, Christie, and Ridley nailed that finale for the character.
