Now that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is finally in theaters, the film's director and producer are setting their sights on their next big project: creating an all new Star Wars trilogy of films set outside the confines of the Skywalker saga. Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman discussed the new trilogy, which was announced back in November, briefly during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, giving a brief update on where they are in the process (in a word: early).
Johnson described his mindset coming out of The Last Jedi, saying,
"We're going to figure out the timing of the next one. We haven't figured
it out yet. I'll say, I don't feel like, 'Oh my God, I'm exhausted, I
need to sit on a beach for a month.' I feel creatively energized right
now. I feel like I want to jump right into work. This whole process has
left me feeling ready to jump in and do it again right away. I don't
know why. I don't know if that's a good sign."
Bergman added that part of the reason for that energy is that they've been done The Last Jedi for quite some time, saying,
"Also, on most of big movies, you work and you deliver the movie
literally last minute. We pretty much finished the movie in early
August, so we've not been working really hard, except doing press here
and there. We had the luxury of delivering the movie a few months
earlier than usual."
Johnson, who is currently slated to write and direct the first installment in the new trilogy in addition to creating the story for all three films, also addressed whether he was planning on bringing in collaborators to handle the second and third films in a separate interview with WIRED magazine. Johnson replied,
"I know I’m going to write and direct the first one, I know I’m going to
come up with the story for the entire trilogy. Beyond that, I just don’t
know yet. We’re still figuring out how this going to go. But all of
those things you just listed are very much on my mind right now."
No release dates have been set for Johnson's new trilogy, but Star Wars: The Last Jedi is in theaters now!
