Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson recently revealed that there would be twenty minutes of deleted scenes coming on the film's blu-ray release. Now Peter Sciretta over at /Film has posted some details about some of the rather extensive deleted scenes from the film. Now, these aren't technically spoilers, but if you'd rather wait and see them for yourself when the blu-ray comes out then you may want to stop reading now.
One of the deleted scenes, according to Sciretta, would have been the third lesson Luke promised to teach Rey. It would have involved Luke telling Rey about some bandits that were coming to rob the Ach-To Caretakers. Rey wants to rush off and help, but Luke tells her that doing so would upset the balance because next time the bandits would simply come back stronger and more ruthless towards the caretaker. Rey doesn't listen and rushes off (we get a glimpse at this scene in the first trailer with the shot of Rey running) anyways, only to find out Luke was tricking her and the caretakers and the "bandits" were simply having a party.
The rest of the scene plays out as follows (via /Film),
"Rey is mad that Luke lied to her and she confronts him. He admits that
he’s sorry, but that she ran so fast and he couldn’t stop her. Rey says
that she thought they were in danger and tried to do something. Luke
responds, seriously this time, that that’s exactly what the resistance
needs – not some old husk of a failed religion. He was again trying to
teach her a lesson. Rey cries, explaining that her real friends are
really dying and “that old legend of Luke Skywalker that you hate so
much, I believed in it.” Luke is in shock. He realizes that he pushed
her too far. Rey tells him she was wrong about believing in him and
storms away."
Another sequence that was cut from the film would have involved further development of the relationship between Finn and Rose. Sciretta describes the scene,
"Originally, the film spent some more time clarifying the dynamic between
Rey and Finn, and further setting up Rose’s crush on the Resistance
“hero.” Rose chastises Finn for “pining for Rey,” which Finn quickly
denies, claiming that he was “raised to fight” and that he finally found
something to fight for in his friend, Rey. “Whatever,” responds Rose
with a hint of jealousy."
There was also an extended moment in the Finn/Phasma showdown that would have called back to Phasma's actions in The Force Awakens, while simultaneously making her even more ruthless. Per /Film,
"A group of stormtroopers corner Finn and he tries to get them on his
side, saying that they can join him and escape Phasma’s grasp, just like
he has. Finn says that she’s really a coward who sold out the codes to
Starkiller Base. He pleads with the First Order squad to escape with
him. The stormtroopers all look at each other…and in a moment borrowed
from a Sergio Leone western, Phasma pulls out her blaster and guns down
all six or seven stormtroopers herself before they have any time to
react."
Of all the deleted scenes described above, the Phasma one is the one I'm disappointed was cut. It would have been such a short moment and would have further cemented Phasma's mercilessness. It also would have acknowledged how strange her final scene was in The Force Awakens and given some context for how she's still around (she killed everyone who knew!) Yes, the Phasma comics mini-series answered this specific question, but it would have been nice for the film to at least hint at that side of Phasma.
As for the Luke and Rey scene, the later half of it sounds really powerful, but ultimately I think it was best that it was cut. A lot of the emotion of the scene sounds like it was moved to Luke and Rey's confrontation over Luke's role in the creation of Kylo Ren and Luke's subsequent conversation with Yoda. That being said, it would have been nice to see Rey plant the idea of Luke being the hero again in his head. One benefit of the scene being cut, though, is that, if he wants to, JJ Abrams can pick up on the thread of Luke having one more lesson to teach Rey as a means of having Luke appear to her as a Force ghost in Episode IX.
