ILMxLAB Shows Off 'Star Wars' VR at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference

Last year during Star Wars Celebration Europe, Lucasfilm announced a new Star Wars Virtual Reality project, written by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins) and developed by the ILMxLAB.  The project was described as being several years away at the time, and we haven't heard anything more about it since.  Yesterday, when ILMxLAB took the stage at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) to show off the virtual reality on the new iMac.  During the presentation, ILM chief John Knoll appeared to show off new content from the upcoming project.

The presentation, featured the player interacting with the environment on Mustafar--in the shadow of Darth Vader's castle seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.  It's worth noting that what was shown at WWDC was a "proof of technology," not an announcement of the game upcoming release.  However, given its similarity to what was shown and discussed at Celebration last year, it seems safe to assume that the presentation shows us some of what we can expect when the full Star Wars VR experience/game is released.

You can see Knoll's entire presentation below,

It will be fascinating to see how this all comes together, when the Goyer written game is eventually released.  Regardless, it's an exciting time for Star Wars and virtual reality.  Already, fans can experience the ILMxLAB's Trials on Tatooine mini game on the HTC Vibe headset and last year saw the release of the Rogue One VR experience in Star Wars Battlefront for the Play Station VR.  And that doesn't even include the recent announcement of the Star Wars VR experiences for hospitalized children that Force for Change and the Starlight Foundation are leading the charge on, or some of the mobile VR experiences that have been released in the last two years.

For more information on what ILMxLABs are working on and Goyer's upcoming Star Wars VR game, check out the panel from last summer's Star Wars Celebration Europe in London below,
