There seems to be a consensus amongst Star Wars fans that Rogue One has the best action of any Star Wars film. I’m one of those people. Rogue One is truly a spectacle to enjoy, and the action is obviously a major part of the package. In many of my favorite games, action is apparent. Uncharted, Halo, The Witcher, the list goes on. But not all action games would mesh well with the action and fights we see in Rogue One. But like I said before, action is only part of the entire package. To help you play great games and continue to get your Rogue One fix, here’s a list, of some great video games to play If you enjoyed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story:
• Star Wars Battlefront (2015): Star Wars Battlefront is the obvious first choice, and the closest you will get to playing out the events of Rogue One. Battlefront is one of the most gorgeous games I have ever played, and it perfectly captures the feel of the Star Wars universe. If you don’t have an OMG moment every couple of minutes playing, you’re doing it wrong. There’s also the recent addition of the Rogue One: Scariff expansion pack, which lets you play Director Orson Krennic, Jyn Erso, and the Rebel and Imperial foot soldiers who fought on the sandy beaches of Scariff. With exciting new games modes and two new heroes, you can’t go wrong with Battlefront.
• Halo 5: Guardians: The first non-Star Wars selection. Halo 5 is the fifth entry in the mainline Halo franchise and served as a turning point when it came to it’s narrative. In previous Halo games’s, Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, let’s just call him Master Chief, was a lone wolf. With the aid of his friend and AI companion, Cortana, Master Chief was able to save the galaxy from evil a whole bunch of times. In Halo 5, Master Chief is reunited with his old squadmates. Together they are Blue Team, an elite Spartan force known for their prowess in combat and memorable personalities. You will also play as Spartan Locke (played by Luke Cage’s Mike Colter) who leads Fireteam Osiris, another unit of elite Spartan soldiers. Much like Rogue One, Halo 5 is held together by the kinship of the main characters in the story. I personally would love to see Chirrut and Baze go up against Locke and Buck (played by Nathan Fillion). With action sequences that rival those of the greatest blockbuster films in the modern era, Halo 5 is a safe bet for having a hell of time. As an added bonus, be sure to also check out Halo: Reach, a game that takes place immediately before the events of the first Halo game. In Reach, a group of Spartans are sent on a dangerous mission, in which they must deliver a- ok, it’s very similar to Rogue One.
• Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: In an effort to save all of you time, I’ll be brief. This is the greatest video game of all time. It is without a doubt one of the greatest Star Wars stories ever told. It has some of the greatest characters to ever grace the galaxy far, far away. And it has HK-47, a homicidal assassin droid who’s sass is only rivaled by the incredible K-2SO. This is an amazing story in the Star Wars galaxy, and even has a few slight homages in Rogue One itself. To name one, you begin aboard a Hammerhead corvette known as the “Endar Spire.” You’ll remember the corvette from the incredible Star Destroyer collision sequence in Rogue One. Go. Play. This. Game. Now!
• Onimusha 3: Demon Siege: Onimusha 3: Demon Siege is the perfect title for someone who needs to get more of their Donnie Yen/Chirrut Îmwe action fix. A traditional action/adventure fighting game from Capcom, Onimusha 3 serves as the third entry into the Onimusha franchise, but don’t be intimidated by the number. It serves as an easy title to jump into, due in part to it’s engaging action mechanics. Donnie Yen provided motion capture and lent a performance to the game, making it authentic in the classic Donnie Yen style of stunt choreography and fighting. Chirrut was a joy to watch on screen, and shades of his master fighting style are clear and present in Onimusha 3.
• Star Wars: Dark Forces: Before there was Rogue One, there was Dark Forces. Dark Forces introduced Star Wars fans to the character of Kyle Katarn, a beloved member of the Legends continuity in Star Wars canon. Kyle Katarn was originally the Rebel who stole the Death Star plans and helped save the Rebellion, but that story is now just a legend, however, that doesn’t make Dark Forces any less worth playing. A first-person shooter in the same style and vein as Doom, Dark Forces excelled in it’s level design and gradual improvements on the first-person shooter genre. A relic of the past, Dark Forces serves as a reminder of how far Star Wars games have come.
