Report: Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy Was Recommended 'Young Han Solo' By Spielberg and Coppola

By Ciaran Duggan,

A number of news outlets have reported that film directors, Stephen Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola, reached out to 'Star Wars' producer Kathleen Kennedy and endorsed Alden Ehrenreich to play the iconic, scruffy-looking, nerf-herding, smuggler, in the new Young Han Solo movie.

The process of finding the young Han Solo was length and arduous for Disney, as they intended to choose an actor who really fit the bill. Disney met with well over 2,500 actors, in their attempts to cast the young Han Solo. By December, the candidates for the role had been narrowed to three actors:

- Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction)
- Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service & Eddie the Eagle)
- Alden Ehrenreich (Joel & Hail, Caesar!)

The timing of the release of Joel and Hail, Caesar was undoubtedly a key factor in Disney's decision to choose Mr. Ehrenreich. These breakthrough roles occurred  in the middle of Disney's search. However, The Hollywood Reporter have stated that the crucial factor which determined the final call was not the timing.

The Hollywood Reporter have declared that revered directors Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park and Jaws) and The Godfather filmmaker, Francis Ford Coppola, reached out to Kathleen Kennedy and vouched for Alden Ehrenreich. The article reveals that Spielberg had previously seen Alden Ehrenreich in a bat mitzvah video, whilst Alden worked with Francis Ford Coppola in the actor's first two movies.

Of course this report remains unconfirmed, but there seems to be a certain level of credibility to this story because it has been picked up by so many renowned news outlets.

What are your thoughts on the casting of the young Han Solo?

Anthony Ingruber is the only one who could do Han justice https://youtu.be/bba_wPdLxp4

I've heard lots of people saying Ehrenreich is an actor who can and should make the role his own. Unlike other re-castings however, this new movie IS meant to portray the younger days of Harrison Ford's Han Solo, so the fact that he looks absolutely nothing like him, and will act "differently" from the Han we know, makes no sense whatsoever.

Meh. It is what it is. Just hope he pulls it off.

Ingruber is an impressionist - we need an actor. I know he played a bit part of a young Ford, but there's no way he can lead a movie like this. Ehrenreich is an actor, and it's a bit extreme to say he looks NOTHING like HF. Costume, makeup, and even his own acting can go a long way. In short, I'd rather have a strong actor than an impressionist.

I dunno about this, I really want to be in love with it but we JUST lost Han Solo. What we need from this kid isn't fair, we need him to be BETTER than Harrison Ford was in order to overlook the fact that we ALREADY SAW THE CHARACTER ARC OF HAN SOLO. I was excited about the idea of a younger han solo movie before the Force Awakens came out but his death changed me. It's time to let him go, a movie that reminds you how great Harrison was can only make it harder for this new guy AND the audience. I hope they pull it off but it feels like even if this film is good it will still be pointless.
