Opinion: Is 'Jyn Erso' Rey's Mother?

By Ciaran Duggan,

Last weekend, Daisy Ridley attained the golden popcorn statuette for Breakthrough Performance at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards. In the aftermath of her victory, Ridley spoke with MTV News about Episode VIII and the circulated fan theory that Jyn Erso, the female lead in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is Rey's mother.

Dasiy Ridley refuted the argument that Jyn was Rey's mother and stated that the parentage of Rey should not be the focus of fan or media attention:

"I'm not being funny you guys, but just because (Erso's) white and got brown hair...it doesn't mean she's my mom....I think the amazing thing about (The Force Awakens) is that Finn and Rey don't come from anywhere, and they find a place. So to me, it's funny that people think it's so important because I don't really think it is. I don't know if I am a Jedi. I don't think I am."

I have to agree with Daisy on the question of Jyn Erso and Rey's parentage. Yes, as fans, we want to know the lineage of Rey, but its not a question which needs to be answered right now. It's a question which doesn't need to be answered in Rogue One. Felicity Jones will become the second female lead character in Star Wars film canon, and I think that is very encouraging. We want to see more lead female characters, but this should not mean that their stories have to entwine with each other. The first trailer for Rogue One gave us a tease about the characters and the plot of the film, but a lot of ambiguity still surrounds the film, so let us take a breather and wait to see what happens.
From a story telling point of view, as I mentioned on this week's SWU podcast, I feel it would be a little bit predictable and obvious for Jyn Erso to be revealed as the mother of Rey. I would like the plot of Rogue One to focus on the central Rebel characters in Rogue One, not the central characters from the Sequel Saga.
