Samuel L. Jackson Thinks 'The Force Awakens' Cast Needs To Go To Lightsaber School

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been met with near universal praise, but it's still impossible for the film to have pleased everyone. One person who may not have been as thrilled with the film as most is Star Wars prequel star Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson, who played Mace Windu in Episodes I-III, was asked by ABC's Peter Travers about his thoughts on the new film while he was promoting his role in Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight. Jackson gave a very diplomatic answer about the film, before adding that he felt the characters in the film needed to go to "lightsaber" school. Check out the clip below,

It doesn't seem too much of a stretch to think that Luke and Snoke will give Rey and Kylo some lightsaber lessons in or before Episode VIII.

With each passing generation, since the fall of the Jedi (damn near "extinction"), the existing ones get weaker in their light saber skills (and surely many other skills) because they have lost their core of teachers and knowledge. Even Luke, the son of Anakin Skywalker and an equally powerful Jedi, had little to no light saber training and anything he taught in his now-extinct new Jedi academy is what he learned on his own through the years. Our new characters, INCLUDING Kylo Ren, clearly have little or NO training. Kylo Ren is a SKYWALKER yet Finn, presumably a non-Force user, wounded him! I actually think it is very cool that as the generations pass you can see how less skilled they are as Jedi! It makes sense! It goes with the story. Obi-Wan and Vader were old and mechanized respectively though they were true traditionally trained and great Jedi. I love that you can see the consequences of the fall of the Jedi Order. Kylo Ren wouldn’t have lasted a SECOND against Darth Maul or such. But that's how it's supposed to be. The Order is in danger of disappearing and is trying to rise from the ashes with almost everything they were being lost.
With the exception of Anakin himself, Mace Windu, Obi-Wan, and the rest of the Jedi we saw in the prequel trilogy, during the "heyday" of the Jedi Order, were all but born Jedi, trained in the Jedi arts since birth with many teachers and a giant, organized Order full of skilled, experienced Jedi. Luke had only weeks, if not days of training, before he lost his teachers. Of course Luke, like Anakin (who was still a child when he began training), was an exceptionally powerful Jedi, descending from the "Chosen One" himself, so it can be understood that he has an affinity to the Force so strong that it may help him see into the past as well as seek consul from the spirits of Obi-Wan and Yoda to help him "fill in the blanks" in his training that he may not be able to figure out himself. But Kylo Ren and Rey (the latter who’s lineage is at yet unconfirmed) are both possibly equally powerful but it's likely they may not have neither the training nor the "access" that Luke has to these things. With or without Luke to teach them, they are never going to get the same degree of training that the prequel trilogy Jedi had. And training IS a very important part of being a Jedi, not merely power with the Force. Without proper training there is not much they can do regardless of how powerful they are.

This brings me to all the raving about Rey's apparent impossible Force feats. I disagree with many (most?) on this. She really didn't do anything more than Anakin or Luke did prior to training. Anakin KNEW about the Jedi and the Force when they found him as a child and already displayed impressive skills, whether he was aware of them or not. Luke was about the same age as Rey yet had never even HEARD of the Jedi much less about the Force, yet we saw him destroy the Death Star with just the encouragement to believe by Obi-Wan’s voice, and draw his light saber from the snow in the Wampa's cave because he BELIEVED it could be done and NEEDED to draw it! At very least Rey already knew about the Jedi and the Force whether she believed in them or not and had discovered she was Force sensitive when Kylo Ren tried to probe her mind. The fact that she attempted a Jedi "mind trick" suggest that she had heard about it before because we never hear anybody tell her about it or witness one. The moment she discovered she had the Force she dared to TRY to use it and did successfully. This is because, unlike Luke, SHE was a far more confident youth having to rely on herself her whole young life. Also, everybody is making a big deal that she defeated Kylo Ren. Exactly, big deal. Kylo Ren may be very powerful and be a Skywalker, but it is just as evident that he has actually had VERY little training with the Force himself! As previously stated, Finn, a non-Force user, fought him and even injured him. Rey BEAT him. But we also see her fighting him out of NEED to survive and being on the retreat the entire time until at the moment of near defeat, Kylo Ren says something results in her actually seeking strength in the Force, focusing on it for strength and courage, believing that she can and HAVING to. It seems to me that Kylo Ren simply could not have trained with Luke very long otherwise neither Finn nor Rey would've lasted a second against him. Again, training is EVERYTHING with the Force. Despite his mentioning training, Snoke clearly hasn't taught him much either and it is likely that it is out of fear of Kylo Ren's potential power. Please! Rey really hasn't done anything more than Anakin or Luke did early on and defeating Kylo Ren is not as big a deal as everyone is making it out to be. Also, we are not entirely sure that yet that Luke's light saber might have CHOSEN to go to her hand and not Kylo's and not that it was a matter of power (though I think it really was but, considering the visions of the light saber were an entirely new thing in Star Wars, it's plausible that it may also have "chosen" to go to her instead).
