Report: Disney to Release Theatrical Cuts of The Original Trilogy

Here we go again.  Empire Magazine is reporting that director John Landis (The Blues Brothers) told them that George Lucas told him that Disney would be releasing the theatrical cuts of the original trilogy.  Empire tweeted out the following,
I have to honest, I'm more than a little skeptical of this rumor.  We've heard this many times before and all previous rumors about it have turned out to be duds.  I've written before how I how think it makes more sense for Disney to focus on moving forward with the the franchise than spend all their time (and money) looking back.  I don't expect it to happen, and with new Star Wars films on the horizon, quite frankly (I know I may in the minority on this), I don't really care if it ever happens.

I'll believe it when I see it.

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

Maybe Jedi Rocks cramps their "practical" style.

Maybe Jedi Rocks blows goats and they know they owe it to the fans to get rid of that crap!!!

I'm very skeptical this will happen, particularly since it would cause confusion as to the canon, but if it does I will be happy for the people who are interested. I know certain fans have been clamorinng for this so that's great! I've always said the ultimate Star Wars blue ray would let you choose any version to watch (like the alien box set). Personally I'm totally fine with the films as is, but I'm in the minority there.

You don't care if it happens because you weren't alive in 1977 when it came out. That's cool though...I recently watched the Despecialized Edition 2.5 in which they did an amazing job piecing together the original theatrical version of Star Wars (including color correction) and I must say it was a totally different experience that truly brought me back to the time when I first saw it! My take is - It'd be very cool to have a high quality original version released. For the sake of canon and for casual watching, I don't mind the blu-ray. The only change in all three movies that really bothered me was giving Vader the "No" dialog in ROTJ....

Han didn't shoot first. First implied that Greedo shot at all. Han shot PERIOD.

I'm not spending my money on low-effects versions of movies that look better in the form I have them now

Great Vimeo channel showing the progress of an independent restoration of the original versions. The restorer gives many good reasons for releasing the originals and explains how the current Blu Ray is not as great as everyone makes it out to be: https://vimeo.com/124147988
