Rumor: JJ Abrams to Direct Episode IX

There's a new report flying around from Latino Review that JJ Abrams will be bookending the sequel trilogy, in that in addition to directing Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens he will also be directing Episode IX while Rian Johnson will direct Episode VIII.  According to Latino Review,

Despite his absence from the production team on the next instalments, his commitment to other ongoing franchises and early rumors of disagreements between him and the Disney Team, there’s a good chance that J.J. Abrams will be back to direct Star Wars: Episode IX.

We can only report it as a rumor this far out, but those at Disney who have seen footage from The Force Awakens are very happy with what Abrams has delivered. J.J. himself has been vocal about how crazy the process has been, but has given equal time to his love of the series.

There are enough conversations about J.J. Abrams returning to direct Episode IX that we've been able to independently verify it four times that his name is the front-runner for the last trilogy instalment and the movie isn't due until 2019, but maybe the Disney process doesn't clash with the Mystery Box Maker as much as we originally thought.

This is an interesting development, if true.  We had heard that Johnson would, in addition to writing and directing Episode VIII, be writing a treatment for Episode IX.  Could we see the two main creatives on the first two instalments of the trilogy coming together to finish out the trilogy in 2019.  As for the veracity of this report, our pal Jason over at MakingStarWars.net reports that he has heard a similar report from one of his sources.  So, we do have two sources reporting this, take from that what you will.

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
