"Kanan is pretty much the coolest guy in the universe," comments Freddie Prinze Jr, the voice behind the character who Dave Filoni is calling the "cowboy Jedi." With his hair pulled back into a tight pony tail and dark green armor covering his arms and shoulders, Kanan, a Jedi who was forced underground by Order 66, is sarcastic, quick-witted, and cocky.
Much like Han Solo, another Star Wars character who is known for his sarcasm, brandished blaster, and piloting skills, Kanan is the "perceived head of the crew of The Ghost," and is known to be rough around the edges.
Like Solo, Kanan's faith in "hokey religions and ancient weapons" has wavered: "He saw the destruction of his way of life at the hands of Darth Vader and the Empire," says Dave Filoni, executive producer of the series. "He doesn't know how [the Jedi] will move forward and survive now.."
We're told that Kanan is haunted by the death of his Jedi brethren, and he has kept his lightsaber locked away. Throughout Star Wars Rebels, fans will watch as he attempts to use the Force again, an ability he's had to keep hidden for fourteen years. Filoni adds that Kanan is "a gunslinger that needs to put the gun away and pick up a sword again to fight for noble causes, selfess causes."
Watch the interview with Dave Filoni and the Rebels crew below to see early footage of Kanan in action:
Filoni is still focused on creating strong characters like he did with the Clone Wars series. Executive producer Simon Kinberg said that fans know that "the tone [of Star Wars shows] shift from story to story, and from movie to show to game." Even though Rebels may focus on different characters and situations, Kinberg noted that "..what's consistent is a reverence and love for the underlying material" and he added that there is a real passion for expanding the world of Star Wars.
