Layoffs at LucasArts; 1313 and First Assault Cancelled

LucasArts announced today that they have had major layoffs and that they will no longer be developing games internally, but will rather be licensing other gaming companies to develop any future Star Wars games.  With the announcement comes the news that both Star Wars: 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault have been cancelled.

LucasArts released the following statement: “After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”

I think, at this point, we all saw this coming.  After the announcement that The Clone Wars was "winding down" and Detours was "postponed", this was the next logical step for Disney, who have seemingly eliminated all projects in place prior to their takeover.  Although LucasArts has not had much success in the past few years, both 1313 and First Assault showed much potential, and it truly is a shame to see them go.

The Star Wars Underworld would like to thank the teams at LucasArts for all their hard work and we wish them the best of luck in the future.
