Report: Details On Unused 'Episode VII: Shadows Of The Sith' Video Game Concept Revealed

By: Benjamin Hart

Now that we've all had a chance to see Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens multiples times and analyze it to the letter, it's hard to imagine how things could have been different. As it turns out, not that long ago, the seventh film in the saga may not have been a film at all, but rather a video game. Back in 2008 the book Rogue Leaders: The Story Of LucasArts was released and inside it a plethora of logos for various video game concepts were revealed. Some of the more intriguing titles included Star Wars: Jedi Knight III - Brink Of Darkness, Star Wars: Darth Maul and Star Wars: Scum And Villainy. But by far the most interesting title included was Star Wars: Episode VII - Shadows Of The Sith. For years speculation has swirled around what this game might have been and how close it got to becoming a reality.

Now, Cinelinx has stepped up to set the record straight. They recently spoke with LucasArts' former creative director Haden Blackman who revealed all about the game's concept. Here's what he said about it's brief development:

"I know everything about it, since it was my basic concept.  In late 2004, we were focus testing/developing a ton of different concepts — over two dozen in all over about a 6 month period. To focus test, I basically just wrote up a 'one-sheet' — a brief description of the game, with a bit of concept art and a logo added. "
“We developed a bunch of logos for this exercise, and sometimes used similar names for slight variations in setting or features so we could do A/B testing (does a concept test better when it’s called out that it’s M-rated? Does the time period make a difference if all other features at the same? etc.). Ultimately, it was a good motivation to generate a ton of different ideas in a short amount of time, but it really just validated what we already knew — the vast majority of gamers wanted to be a Jedi/Force wielder, and the setting, story, even the core features were secondary to that."

And about the plot of the game, has said:

"Episode VII: Shadows of the Sith would have put you in the role of an adult Ben Skywalker who was walking the line between the light and dark sides of the Force, unleashing new Force powers never-before-seen in games or movies as he investigated a new threat to the galaxy (a Solo…)."

Of course, all of this was happening prior to the release of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge Of The Sith in 2005, a time when George Lucas had seemingly decided that the film saga would end with that film. So a video game in place of a movie was a plausible idea, but ultimately did not come to pass. Blackman further explains that these ideas ended up being applied to other games:

"Eventually, I ended up pulling elements from several of the pitches to craft the pitch for The Force Unleashed. As we wrapped up TFU, I started working on some new concepts and revisited the far-future concept under the name “Shadow of the Sith.” The Darth Maul idea was also briefly resurrected after TFU2, and different versions of 1313 reused either the Underworld or Scum & Villainy codenames."

We've heard, and seen, a lot from the Darth Maul game, 1313 has seemingly been cancelled, and Underworld is a name that has been most prominently associated with the heavily rumored Star Wars live-action TV series. All of these sound like really cool ideas, so we can hope that they will be considered for new games in the future.

All in all, its fascinating to now look back at these concepts and consider what might have been. Sure, the game sounds awesome. And being that it would have fit inside the Legends-verse focusing on Luke Skywalker's son Ben, I'm sure a lot of book fans would be excited to play. But at the end of the day, I think The Force Awakens was the best Sequel we could have hoped for.

There is Still Hope For 'Star Wars: Underworld' TV Series and 'Star Wars 1313' Video Game

By: Dominic Jones

In the years between Revenge of the Sith and the announcement that Disney had purchased Lucasfilm and would be making new films, Star Wars fans heard a lot about a live action Star Wars series set between Episodes III and IV that George Lucas was working on.  It would later be revealed that the series had the working title "Underworld" and a few details about the series were revealed by writers Stephen Scaia and Ronald D. Moore.  The series was put on hold a few years prior to the Disney sale and most assumed it would stay there once Disney took control.

Not necessarily according Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy who revealed to /Film that they were still exploring options for "Underworld" as well as the video game Star Wars: 1313 which was cancelled when LucasArts was shut down in 2013 and would have tied into the series.

Kennedy said,
"No. No, interestingly enough, that's an area we’ve spent a lot of time, reading through the material that he developed is something we very much would like to explore. And there was 1313 the game, where there was…unbelievable. So our attitude is, we don’t want to throw any of that stuff away. It’s gold. And it’s something we’re spending a lot of time looking at, pouring through, discussing, and we may very well develop those things further. We definitely want to."

It's very exciting to hear that these projects are not as dead as they once seemed.  According to George Lucas there were two seasons worth of scripts finished for "Underworld" and we know that 1313 was fairly far along in its development (though the story kept changing).  Concept art from the game can be seen in the fantastic Star Wars Art: Concepts book that was released a few years ago.  "Underworld" has left some mark on the Star Wars canon, at Celebration Europe 2013 Lucasfilm's Pablo Hidalgo revealed that concepts and hints about the series were included in Star Wars: The Clone Wars as far back as season two.

Also it's interesting to not that Kennedy was not prompted to bring up 1313, only "Underworld", according to Peter at /Film, who interviewed Kennedy.  This seems to suggest, to me, that there was more cross over between the two projects than we initially thought.

Hopefully both projects eventually see a release. They seemed like cool concepts for Star Wars and hopefully they find a place in the new Star Wars canon.

Report: Visceral's Star Wars Game Will Be In The Style Of Uncharted & 1313

By: Benjamin Hart

With all excitement surrounding DICE's Star Wars Battlefront ramping up it's easy to forget that another EA developer, Visceral, is working on a Star Wars game of their own. A lot of speculation and rumors about this game have permeated the web, most pointing to it being focused on Han Solo. The only solid info we have is that Amy Hennig and Todd Stashwick have been working on the game for some time now as creative director and co-writer, respectively. Hennig is know for her work in the incredibly popular "Uncharted" video game series. Now it seems Nolan North, who voices Nathan Drake in Uncharted, has spilled some more details on Visceral's project. Nerdist is reporting that while speaking at a panel at MetroCon in Tampa, Florida, North briefly discussed his former colleague's current job with EA, stating:

“If you’re a big fan of Amy Hennig and her style of story, she’s gone to EA and is going to reboot a brand new Star Wars franchise in the style of Uncharted, and I happen to know a lot about it and it’s going to be awesome.”

And when asked if this game is the previously canceled Star Wars: 1313, he replied:

“No, It’s different, but it's along the same lines.”

You can hear the discussion at 20:50 in the video below:

It's interesting that North refers to this game as a "reboot." Although myself and others like to call the new Battlefront game "Battlefront 3", this newest game by DICE is indeed a reboot that series. Could we be seeing a reimagining of such classic games as Shadows Of The Empire or Jedi Knight? Hopefully we will learn more about this game very soon.

Which previous Star Wars game would you like to see rebooted in the style of Uncharted? Let us know in the comments section below, or in Club SWU on Facebook!

Report: More Rumors & Teases Of Visceral's Star Wars Game

By: Benjamin Hart

For the past few weeks, and really the past decade, Star Wars gamers having been getting hyped about Star Wars Battlefront, which is being done by EA's Swedish developer DICE slated for release on November 17th. But Battlefront is far from the only Star Wars video game currently in development. Last year we learned that another of EA's development companies, Visceral, is working on a Star Wars game of their own, which is rumored to be focused on Han Solo. Amy Hennig, who is the creative director on the game, and Todd Stashwick, co-writer of the game, have teased their involvement in the project several times on social media. A recent photo shared by Stashwick on Instagram, which shows him with Hennig surrounded by various Star Wars collectibles, has led to more speculation about what exactly the two are working on. You can check that out below:

A photo posted by Todd Stashwick (@tstashwick) on

The Han Solo Black Series action figure, along with Stashwick's "I'll be your scoundrel" T-shirt seem to hint that the earlier rumors may very well be true, and Visceral could indeed be working on a Han Solo game. The folks at Star Wars 7 News chimed in as well, sighting inside sources that claim that the game will be a third person action game featuring Han Solo smuggling and "something going on with bounty hunters".  They also add that it being built on the cryengine and could incorporate some early concepts from the canceled Star Wars 1313 game. The suggest that the first footage from this game will premiere at this year's E3 in Los Angeles. coming up June 16th - 18th. If that is true, we're a little over a month away from finally see what Hennig and Stashwick have been up to.

Report: 'Star Wars 1313' Trademark Not Renewed by Disney

By: Dominic Jones

I think it's safe to say this is the final nail in the coffin for the cancelled video game Star Wars 1313.  The Escapist is reporting that,

"The United States Patent and Trademark Office currently classifies Star Wars 1313 as 'Abandoned because no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued.'"

Up until this point some fan had hoped that EA would pick up work on the game where LucasArts left off, but now that seems to be done.  1313 was first announced back at E3 in 2012 and was cancelled when LucasArts shut down in April.   Since then details about the story, which would have featured Boba Fett have leaked out.

With E3 2014 now just a few months away, it will be interesting to see what EA has in store for Star Wars.

Star Wars 1313 Story Details & Concept Art Revealed

By: Benjamin Hart

Ever since Star Wars 1313 was officially announced over a year ago the video game has been shrouded in mystery, both in and outside the Universe. With Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm and the major downsizing of Lucasarts many have feared that we may never see 1313 completed and released. Nevertheless, IGN has now brought to light a wealth of details as well as extraordinary pieces of concept art for the game, of which you can see two from the collection above and below. While we knew from the beginning that 1313 would be set on level 1313 of the Coruscant Underworld, hence the title, details on the main characters were sketchy. Later it was revealed that Boba Fett was to be the main focus of the story, set between Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope. IGN explains that the game's story would have actually began on Tatooine with Boba working for Jabba the Hutt and would have shown Boba develop from how we see him in the Prequel era into how he looks in the Original trilogy. Boba's companion during gameplay would have been a Droid(above) that looks exactly like C-21 Highsinger which appeared alongside Boba in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, that cannot be a coincidence. The Droid would actually end up betraying Boba in the game, supposedly.

All in all it is sad not knowing the fate of this game, but at least we have this info and beautiful concept art to enjoy. I highly recommend heading over to IGN.com to get the full story as well as the images and video!

Rumor: EA to Announce Continuation of Star Wars 1313 at E3

By: Dominic Jones

Could Star Wars 1313 have new life?  After the shut down of LucasArts earlier this year it was believed that all Star Wars projects it had been working on had died with it, this may not be the case.  A leaked document containing a list of all the projects that will be announced during E3 has appeared on the Spanish website Area Jugones and on that list is Star Wars 1313 (sadly there is no mention of Battlefront 3).

Now remember, this is just a rumor and needs to be taken with a major grain of salt.  That being said, it's pretty exciting to see EA continue work on what was such a hotly anticipated game.  Could it be that the announcement of Star Wars Rebels had something to do with this?  Both projects are set in the same time period which could lead to some cool crossover.

As I mentioned above, there is no mention of Star Wars Battlefront 3 on the list.  However all hope is not lost for a BF3 announcement during E3.  For one, the list in question could just be a fake.  Assuming, however, that the list is real it could be that the list is incomplete.  We know EA has a press conference planned for E3 where they'll unveil their Star Wars plans and seeing as they have three studios working on Star Wars games it seems unlikely they will make just one announcement.  Also, remember that an EA exec recently name dropped Battlefront when discussing Star Wars games, I highly doubt that was an accident...

Regardless, E3 will be an exciting time for Star Wars fans.

Big thanks to our friend Jeffery White for bringing this to our attention!

Layoffs at LucasArts; 1313 and First Assault Cancelled

By: Dominic Jones

LucasArts announced today that they have had major layoffs and that they will no longer be developing games internally, but will rather be licensing other gaming companies to develop any future Star Wars games.  With the announcement comes the news that both Star Wars: 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault have been cancelled.

LucasArts released the following statement: “After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”

I think, at this point, we all saw this coming.  After the announcement that The Clone Wars was "winding down" and Detours was "postponed", this was the next logical step for Disney, who have seemingly eliminated all projects in place prior to their takeover.  Although LucasArts has not had much success in the past few years, both 1313 and First Assault showed much potential, and it truly is a shame to see them go.

The Star Wars Underworld would like to thank the teams at LucasArts for all their hard work and we wish them the best of luck in the future.

Report: Clouded the Future of 1313 Is

 By: Dominic Jones

Ever since the announcement that Disney was purchasing Lucasfilm, fans have wondered about the future of projects that were in the works prior to change.  One of those projects is the video game Star Wars 1313, which was revealed at last year's E3.  The gaming website Kotaku has some conflicting reports on the future of the game is.  On the one hand LucasArts is insisting that "Star Wars 1313 continues production."  But on the other hand Kotaku has three sources close to the matter that say the project has been put on hold.

It's not to much of a leap to think that Disney may cancel the game.  They've proven, with the postponement of the 3D re-releases, that their willing to stop work on something regardless of how much work has gone into it.  Star Wars: 1313's situation seems to mirror that of the future of the TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, in that production continues but there is no promise that it will see the light of day.  One piece of evidence that suggests the game's future may not be so bleak is that the StarWars.com Episode Guide for the most recent episode of The Clone Wars "To Catch a Jedi" (an episode in which the majority of the action took place on levels 1312 through 1315) references Star Wars 1313 multiple times.  Even supervising director Dave Filoni references it during the featurette, during which new footage from 1313 was shown.  On a personal note, the episode "To Catch a Jedi" made me really excited for the game as the Coruscant underworld seemed like a really cool place to explore.

Another possibility, however, is that the game is being delayed so that the game will tie-into another project.  Kotaku informs us that (to one's real surprise) the game was developed to be a tie-in to the live action series, for which 50 scripts have already been written with the action taking place largely in the Coruscant underworld.  The live action series has since been put on hold and the game continued forward.  Recently Paul Lee, president of Disney owned television network ABC, revealed that the network was interested in working with Lucasfilm and even went as far as to say they were going to consider the live action series.  Could Disney and ABC have decided to go ahead with the series and are simply delaying 1313 until the series is ready so the two can tie-into each other?  This is pure speculation on my part and there is no indication from Disney, ABC, or Lucasfilm that this is in the works, but wouldn't that be cool?

Regardless of who you believe when it comes to the future of Star Wars 1313, I highly recommend checking out the article on Kotaku, as it outlines the fascinating development of the game, from it's initial conception, to the variations on what type of game it would be, to George Lucas' thoughts on the game.  It's definitely worth a read.

This article includes the opinion and views of the writer, and not the entire Star Wars Underworld organization.

"Star Wars 1313" Press Release

By: Dominic Jones

With E3 taking place this week, LucasArts released the official press release for the recently announced Star Wars 1313, offering a few new details about plot and gameplay. Check it out for yourself below:

LUCASARTS DROPS GAMERS INTO THE CRIMINAL UNDERWORLD WITH NEW MATURE THEMED VIDEOGAME FRANCHISE, STAR WARS 1313 ™

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif – May 31, 2012 – LucasArts, a Lucasfilm Ltd. company, announced today a new internally developed videogame franchise, Star Wars 1313 ™. The game will make its formal debut at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles June 5-7. As players take control of a lethal bounty hunter in a never-before-seen dark and mature world, Star Wars 1313 introduces an integrated development approach by bringing together great artists across the Lucasfilm organization, including LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, Lucasfilm Animation Ltd. and Skywalker Sound. A third person cinematic action adventure game, Star Wars 1313 will bring to life the Coruscant underworld, the most dangerous place in the Star Wars™ galaxy.

Named for Level 1313, a ruthless criminal underground deep below the surface of the planet of Coruscant, the game puts players in control of a deadly bounty hunter as he uses an arsenal of exotic weaponry to hunt down his marks and uncover the truth surrounding a criminal conspiracy. Star Wars 1313 emphasizes epic set pieces and fast-paced combat with a hero who uses human skills and gadgets, rather than supernatural Force powers, to make his way through this dangerous world.

"We're excited to share one of the projects LucasArts has been hard at work developing," said Paul Meegan, President, LucasArts. "Star Wars 1313 dives into a part of the Star Wars mythos that we've always known existed, but never had a chance to visit. We are committed to bringing the best gameplay experience and visual fidelity to life and I truly believe the work we are showcasing at E3 will speak for itself."

"Star Wars 1313" Revealed

After weeks of speculation, LucasArts finally revealed what Star Wars 1313 is: it's a video game! Geoff Keighley of Spike's Game Trailer's TV broke the news and made a trip out to LucasArts where he revealed some features of the game. The game centers around a Bounty Hunter in the most dangerous place in the galaxy, known as level 1313. Very little more about the story was revealed other than the game would take place on Coruscant and deals with treachery, crime and gangs. Keighley also looked at the facial capture technology used in the game, explaining to the world that this is the same technology used on Mark Ruffalo in order to create the Hulk in the blockbuster film The Avengers. In addition we also learned that the game will be third person. More details about the game including a first look at the gameplay will be shown during Spike's E3 coverage on Monday June 4, 2012 at 12pm EST/9 am PST.

Update: StarWars.com has since been updated with more info about the game including this interesting tidbit about the game's plot and content:

"Using an arsenal of exotic weaponry to hunt down marks, the player must also uncover the truth surrounding a criminal conspiracy in this third-person cinematic action adventure game. It's a bold new take on the Star Wars galaxy, intended for mature audiences"

Also be sure to check out the game's official website here and like it on Facebook here.

Star Wars 1313: The Video Game?

 By: Dominic Jones

Earlier this week it was revealed that LucasFilm had purchased various domain names all of which were related to Star Wars 1313, which initially led to speculation that it was the Boba Fett movie Joe Johnston said he hoped to make. As of yet there has been no official word from LucasFilm as to what the project actually is but new sources are strongly suggesting that Star Wars 1313 will be a video game. The website Siliconera uncovered that the trade mark for Star Wars 1313 is for "use with video game software, computer game software, books containing puzzles and games, action figures, on-line entertainment services for computer and video games, and online social network services." And NOT for TV shows or films. Siliconera also provided this comparison between the trademark for The Force Unleashed and Star Wars 1313 (click to enlarge the images).

The video game theory is also backed up by the fact that, earlier this year, LucasArts was hiring an online game specialist that would "revolutionize the industry." We are still waiting of official word for LucasFilm as to what the project actually is.

Star Wars 1313???

By: Dominic Jones

Lucasfilm has once again purchased a series of domain names and once again fan speculation is running rampant. It's been reported that Lucasfilm bought eight domain names all of which featured the number 1313, as well as either the words Star Wars or the letters SW. This has led to speculation that this is the name of the Boba Fett spin-off movie Captain America director and Boba Fett concept designer Joe Johnston said he hoped to make because CT-1313 was an alias of Boba Fett on Aargau, in the young readers book Boba Fett: Maze of Deception. But before you get your hopes up for that, recall last year, around this time, LucasFilm purchased the domain name starwarsidentities.com, and fans went nuts speculating that this could be anything from the Live-action series, to the next big EU stories, to even the next film. Star Wars: Identities of course, turned out to be a travelling museum exhibit, currently open in Montreal, Quebec. So, while it's fun to speculate, don't get too excited until we get official word from LucasFilm.

The domain names purchased by Lucasfilm are:

1313starwars.co.uk
