For forty years the legendary Peter Mayhew has been the man behind the mask of the mighty Chewbacca and breathed life into the character in the first seven live-action Star Wars films. Due to his age and physical limitations, Mayhew worked in tandem with another actor to portray Chewie in The Force Awakens. Now it appears the Peter is officially passing the torch, err, fur, to the next generation.

Chewbacca Visits A School In County Kerry, Ireland

By: Benjamin Hart

Over the past few weeks we've been getting numerous reports about the production of Star Wars: Episode VIII that is currently happening in Ireland. Filming has recently been taking place along the coastline of the country at such locations as Malin Head and Ceann Sibéal. In doing so, members of the cast and crew have been spotted in various locations. Carrie Fisher is said to be in the area, and other members of the cast, including Mark Hamill, we're seen at an airport recently.

But so far the most notable cast member appearance happened at a school in County Kerry just a few days ago. The BBC reports that none other than the mighty Chewbacca himself made a surprise appearance to schoolchildren at the Scoil Fheirtearaigh National School in Ballyferriter this past Monday. According to Movie Bit and at tweet they found, it appears the actor in the suit is none other than Joonas Suotamo.

Suotamo portrayed Chewie alongside Peter Mayhew in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and doubled for the legendary actor in the more strenuous action scenes that Mayhew could not perform.

The principal of the school, Mairín Ní Chartúir, spoke briefly about how the Wookiee's visit came to be:

"We received a call from the production team asking could they pay a surprise visit to the kids on Monday. Of course, we said yes and were told to not let anyone know about the visit and the parents were told on Monday that the kids would be staying an hour later for the surprise. Chewbacca walked in with the production team and took photos with the children and watched them perform the Star Wars theme tune that the kids had learned, as we are quite a musical school."

You can watch video from the event below:

Scientists Name New Species of Weevil After Chewbacca

By: Dominic Jones

A team of researchers discovered several new species of Trigonopterus Fauvel recently and chose to name one of them after everyone's favorite Wookiee, Chewbacca!  The new weevil's were discovered by scientists Matthew H. Van Dam, Raymond Laufa, Alexander Riedel, after spending ten days on the island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea.

The explained their decision to name the Weevil after Chewie in their paper announcing the finds, published in ZooKeys last week, saying that,

This epithet is a noun in apposition and based on the likeable fictional character Chewbacca in George Lucas’ Star Wars movies, portrayed primarily by Peter Mayhew. This species has dense scales on the head and the legs, which reminds the authors of Chewbacca’s dense fur."

Though they share the name Chewbacca, the Trigonopterus chewbacca and Wookiees don't have much in common.  For starters, the Trigonopterus chewbacca is only about 2.78 to 3.13 mm long, whereas Peter Mayhew is 2.21 m tall.

This isn't the first time a species has been named after a Star Wars character.  Last March researchers named a new species of cat fish after the bounty hunter Greedo, in 2012 a spider was named after the Sarlacc pit, and in 1996 a species of tree mites were named after Darth Vader.  (If you're interested in more species named after Star Wars characters, Live Science has a fun list here).

Peter Mayhew Announces He'll Be Tweeting Pages from Original Star Wars Script Ahead of Big Announcement

By: Dominic Jones

The mighty Chewbacca appears to be leading up to a mighty announcement.  Peter Mayhew, the actor who portrays Chewbacca in the Star Wars films announced on Twitter today that in celebration of Star Wars Episode VIII beginning filming he will be tweeting pages from his copy of George Lucas' original Star Wars script from 1976 every day leading up to a big announcement.  Mayhew Tweeted the first four pages from The Adventures of Luke Starkiller as taken from The Journal of the Whills: Saga I: Star Wars by George Lucas earlier this evening.  Check them out below,
Obviously, this is super cool of Mayhew to do (and you should thank him on Twitter for doing so).  The question is, what announcement is this leading up to?  It seems to be related to both the classic script and Episode VIII.  Let us know your theories in the comments.

Report: Peter Mayhew and Tim Rose Cancel Convention Appearance Due to Episode VIII Filming

By: Dominic Jones

Filming on Star Wars Episode VIII is slated to begin this month and, unfortunately for some fans, this has resulted in a couple of Star Wars actors cancelling an upcoming convention appearance.  Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) and Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar) have cancelled their scheduled appearance at Pensacon in Pensacola, Florida this February 19th-21st due to filming commitments.  Pensacon posted the following on their Facebook page,

Unfortunately, we have some bad news to report this morning, but we prefer to let you know as soon as we know something...
Posted by Pensacon on Wednesday, February 3, 2016

Obviously, the conclusion is that they will be on set for Episode VIII which means we can expect both Chewie and Ackbar back for the Rian Johnson directed film.  While I'm sure this is disappointing for fans who are attending Pensacon, I think it's a fair price to pay to have these characters back in Episode VIII

Joonas Suotamo Talks Doubling For Peter Mayhew As Chewbacca in 'The Force Awakens'

By: Benjamin Hart

One of the biggest joys of watching The Force Awakens was seeing the beloved characters of the Original Trilogy brought to life once again. While Han Solo took a lot of the spotlight, a scoundrel is nothing without his Wookiee. Yes, Peter Mayhew also reprises his role as Chewbacca in the film. but it should be know that he did not do it alone.

For the past several years Mayhew has had problems with knees forcing him to use his trademark Lightsaber cane at times. Due to this, he was unable to perform certain scenes in the film that required more strenuous movements from Chewie. Because of this, Lucasfilm brought in Joonas Suotamo, a 29 year old Basketball player from Finland to double for Mayhew. Just recently Suotamo spoke with Business Insider about his role in the film. We grabbed some highlights from the interview which you can read below:

First off, Suotamo discussed his passion for acting, despite being discouraged by his 6 foot, 11 inch stature:

"I loved doing theater in high school. But I just didn't believe my chances to get any acting part were possible because of my size, so I studied more behind the camera."

He began his own video production company and even sold insurance to support himself. It was in late 2013 when he was contacted about auditioning for an unknown film that turned out to be Star Wars:

"I took three trips there [during the audition], and on the first time I got more details and realized what my role would be."

He subsequently studied Mayhew's performance in the Original Trilogy in detail by rewatching those films repeatedly and in April 2014 he was informed by director J.J. Abrams that he had gotten the part. Soon after he spent five months on set with Mayhew whom he doubled for and also sought guidance for portraying the nuances of the iconic Wookiee correctly. Apparently many of Chewie's scenes were shot twice, once with Mayhew and another with Suotamo. When asked which specific scenes he was in, the actor declined to answer:

"I will never get into it. That's for people to guess and figure out."

Suotamo was also present that fateful day when the Millennium Falcon door fell on Harrison Ford, breaking his ankle:

"That was a horrible day. I immediately tried to lift it, but it wouldn't even move. It was stopped by an emergency button, but none of us knew that. We were all freaking out. But [Ford] was great, he wanted everyone to not worry about him."

Warning: Major spoilers for The Force Awakens ahead!

Suotamo further discussed his time on set, specifically when they shot the scene in which Han Solo meets his demise:

"It was a tense feeling on set. Everything was much more quiet than usual. Between takes, no one would talk much. Watching Harrison and Adam Driver do the scene was emotional."

He also added that he plans to continue doubling for Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca in future Star Wars films. Be sure to read the full article with Joonas Suotamo on Business Insider!

Last week Harrison Ford and Omaze announced a new "Force for Change" initiative, where fans can enter to win a trip for four to the premier of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens in LA or London.  Today, Lucasfilm released a new video featuring JJ Abrams promoting the new campaign and members of The Force Awakens cast revealing what Charities the campaign will be supporting.  Check it out below,

The cast and filmmakers of Star Wars: The Force Awakens are teaming up with Omaze to support 15 incredible causes!...

I think it's great to see Lucasfilm supporting so many great charities.  Plus its fun to see JJ Abrams joking about the fan reaction to lack of Luke Skywalker in the promotional material for the film.  I can't wait to see what they have in store next week.

Peter Mayhew Talks About his New 'The Force Awakens' Co-Stars

By: Dominic Jones

Peter Mayhew, The Mighty Chewbacca himself, sat down with Rohan Williams of Bmag.com recently to talk about his return to a galaxy far, far away in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.  Mayhew shared his thoughts on his new co-stars John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, as well as the marketing of The Force Awakens thus far.

On working with Boyega and Ridley, Mayhew said,
"John, I liked very, very much. He’s a great actor. We had several scenes together, and John is one of those guys who knows how to react to any situation. He’s got a marvelous face… he’s got a wonderful personality. He has an advantage because he has a comic’s sense of humour.

Daisy… was a little bit solid. More like Natalie [Portman] on the other movies [the prequels]. But I think, once she gets to see everything going on, she’s going to enjoy it, because it’s going to relax her. She’s going to be one hell of an actress. She will tell you, she will say, ‘I never thought we could do this, but now I see it’.

When we were at Star Wars Celebration, she was completely different to how she was on set… I think she got taken aside by her agent and told not to be too stiff. So we watched her blossom, from a quiet young lady, into the girl who was there at Star Wars Celebration. She had blossomed; she was beautiful and full of personality. I think she’s got a lot of personality still to come out, and if the right movies come along, she will do very, very well."

Peter Mayhew with Daisy Ridley and John Boyega at Star Wars Celebration
On the "Chewie, we're home" reveal at Star Wars Celebration back in April,
"When I saw it, I had 7,000 people around me. We were at Star Wars Celebration, and George said… no, JJ said, ‘Do you want to see a trailer?’ And everybody says, ‘Yes, please’. The lights go out in the hall, I’m looking up at the screen, and I’m thinking it’s just going to be the sand dunes and blah blah blah. But then Han and Chewie are there, and the line is, ‘Chewie, we’re home’. And everybody in the hall is crying, or laughing, or cheering, or whatever. And I just thought, ‘Wow. How can we not have a success when you get 7,000 people reacting like that?’

“Even the Lucasfilm people, even [producer] Kathleen Kennedy, she’d been up on stage all day, and she was crying. I was standing six or eight feet away from JJ, and he was just going, ‘Hmm… I like this’. It was terrific. It was a terrific thing that we were able to do, and it was such a good way of getting it out to all these people. It was marvellous. It was one of those moments… it gives you pride in what you’ve established."

You can read the rest of the interview, including Mayhew's reaction to reuniting with Harrison Ford, over at Bmag.com.

The past 48 have been incredible and crazy for Star Wars fans! Meanwhile, several cast members from The Force Awakens took part in the festivities, most notably Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, who portray Rey and Finn in the film, respectively, visited the Disney Store on Oxford Street in London amidst the midnight madness event, greeting fans and grabbing some merchandise for themselves.

Throughout the day and night Ridley and Boyega, and some fellow co-stars, took to social media to document their experiences. Below we collected various videos and photos that they shared for your viewing pleasure.

First off, Daisy Ridley posted videos of her(and her Dog's) reaction to a suitcase she recieved that was filled with The Force Awakens items:

Harrison Ford, Simon Pegg & More Discussed With EW

By: Benjamin Hart

Over the past few days Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican has been releasing pieces of his phenomenal interview with Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan discussing The Force Awakens. These articles have proven to be the most revealing feature we've seen from the film thus far, giving us brand new looks at some of the characters, revealing what made J.J. Abrams take the job of directing the first place, more details about Kylo Ren, character name origins and some news about the Han Solo Anthology film. They then continued on with more articles focused on Han Solo, Simon Pegg, production designer Rick Carter, and various other topics. Below we have collected a number of excerpt with the most interesting quotes from the interviews.

J.J. Abrams first spoke about Harrison Ford's on-set injury and his seemingly miraculous recovery:

“It was obviously a horrible experience that I wish had never happened for obvious reasons. But the truth is, once we knew that Harrison was going to be okay, we all realized this was this greatest gift to the movie, and I would think that any filmmaker would say, ‘If I could get a break after a month of shooting, for a few weeks, to recalibrate, I would take it.'... There are some places where he’s more active than he was prior to the accident. As you’ll see in the movie, he is running and doing more physical activity in this movie than I think anyone who knows he was injured would expect. Nothing was adjusted or lessened because of that accident. Even for Harrison, who is famously resilient and strong, he blew everyone’s minds.”

You can read about that further here.

They also spoke about the joint issues that Peter Mayhew has had with his knees, which have forced him to use a cane and a wheelchair in recent years. They confirm that another actor stepped in to don the iconic Wookiee fur in more strenuous, action oriented scenes. Still, Mayhew was the preferred actor to portray Chewbacca whenever he was able. Kathleen Kennedy spoke briefly about a moment off set when Mayhew and Ford reunited:

“We had a dinner and the whole cast was reunited just before we started shooting. I had no idea how close Peter and Harrison were. And when Harrison came into the room and Peter was sitting down, he just went over and gave him the biggest hug, and you could just see that there had been this incredible relationship between these two.”

Be sure to read the full article by clicking here!

Next, EW focused their attention on someone that's been getting who's been getting a lot of it lately: Simon Pegg. While Pegg himself was not available to comment, J.J. Abrams talked extensively about the actor's involvement in the film, and it's not what you think. Aside from playing an alien of some kind, as we saw in the Comic Con reel, Abrams says Pegg offered support to the writing team as well:

“I will say this in terms of Simon: while he won’t be recognizable in the movie, in all honesty, his role in this – not the performance or the character – but his support and friendship has been massively important and helpful in the process,” Abrams says, shifting from deadpan to sincere. “He was a wonderful partner in crime to kick the story around and ask questions and come up with ideas, and he was an incredibly helpful part of the process for all of us. I’m very grateful.”

“He was a sounding board. He would drop by the set because he wanted to, and when he could, he would help… We could talk about things, and he was a perfect combination of incredibly smart screenwriter, fan of the series, critical fan of the series, and friend of mine – but not just blindly supportive. He was an honest, critical friend. And he wasn’t so close to it that he became immune to things. He would come in with fresh eyes and very smart ideas. He’s one of a handful of people along the way that has been really priceless.”

Abrams was also asked about the rumor that Daniel Craig is playing a Stormtrooper, which he replied:

“I’ve been asked to say nothing by Her Majesty’s Secret Service.”

Click here to read more about Simon Pegg.

Additionally, Abrams discussed working with production designer Rick Carter:

“I was incredibly blessed to work with Rick Carter, who – beyond being a brilliant production designer – is a font of imagination and associations. He is able to make connections to things that no one else can see, and he has such a trove of references and life experience and images and design ideas.”

He also spoke about taking inspiration from the late, legendary Ralph McQuarrie:

“We both knew the importance of what McQuarrie had done, and how critical he was in creating the aesthetic of what we all know is Star Wars. We could have taken another path and said, ‘Okay, everything that we all know about Star Wars has been done; let’s go somewhere else and do something totally different,’ but when you’re lucky enough to inherit the history of this world that we know, there should be a continuum.”

You can read that article here!

And lastly, J.J. Abrams talked about communicating with the fans and the various reveals we've seen so far:

"They’re all, in a way, pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that is, little by little, coming together in some form. We’re doing the best we can to simply finish this movie, and make it as good as it can be, and at the same time, dole out moments and characters and images that will be in line with what Lucas has been doing for so many years.”

He was also asked about Supreme Leader Snoke. Of course he wouldn't give any details about the character, but he had high praise for the actor playing him, Andy Serkis:

“I will say that Andy Serkis is like working with someone who is an historically great actor. He is the kindest, sweetest, most lovely guy, so it’s not that he puts on any airs of being pretentious or anything at all, but he’s simply so damn good, that when I’m working with him, I feel like I’m working with someone who is, you know, like a Charles Laughton, or someone who is just so extraordinary. Then there’s the whole matter of how he incorporates technology in a way that no one has seen or done… There are many levels to his genius, but he is certainly a genius.”

You can read more of Abrams thoughts on that, as well as working with Ben Burtt, by clicking here!

Be sure to pick up a copy of Entertainment Weekly as soon as you can, which is on newsstands everywhere now!

Report: Daisy Ridley & John Boyega Explored Star Wars Celebration In Disguise

By: Benjamin Hart

Those who have visited Comic Cons and Star Wars Celebrations in the past know how difficult it can be to move about on the convention floor. With thousands of like minded individuals packed into the same room, it can be very hectic at times even for the most casual con-goer. And for Celebrities it is an even greater challenge to enjoy a convention without being swarmed by countless fans wanting photos and autographs. This has led to many well know faces being forced to find creative ways of hiding their presence when they visit events such as this. It seems that none other than two of the stars of the next Star Wars film, The Force Awakens, did just that at last week's Star Wars Celebration Anaheim. Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, alongside Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and several other cast members, made a surprise appearance on stage Thursday morning in Anaheim at a special panel kicking off the four day event. Interestingly Boyega and Ridley did not appear anywhere at Celebration following the Thursday Panel, but we have now uncovered some evidence that clearly shows the two stuck around to participate in the festivities in a very sneaky way.

Our first clue comes from Chewbacca himself, Peter Mayhew, who posted a photo of himself with Daisy and John at Celebration on Facebook Thursday afternoon. Curiously, Ridley appears to be wearing a Trandoshan mask while Boyega wears a yellow striped Clone Trooper helmet, suggesting that the two had been doing some minor cosplaying:

New members of our extended family of #starwars at #starwarscelebration. Uncle Peter with Daisy and John. So good to see them again. #chewiewearehome..
Posted by Peter-Angie Mayhew on Thursday, April 16, 2015

A few days later John Boyega posted a video and photo of himself on Instagram in the same Clone Trooper helmet, walking amongst fans on the main convention floor and even participating in a Lightsaber duel with a fan:

For those of us in attendance, it's amazing to think we may have literally bumped into Rey or Finn and had no idea. Kudos to them cleverly making sure they had the opportunity to enjoy the convention as fans themselves. We can't wait to see them at the next Celebration in London next year!

Peter Mayhew Expected To Make Full Recovery After Pneumonia Hospitalization

By: Benjamin Hart

It has come to our attention the mighty Chewbacca himself has fallen ill. The news surfaced recently that Peter Mayhew, who portrayed the Wookiee in Episode III, IV, V, VI, and more recently Episode VII, had been hospitalized with pneumonia. Star Wars fans have understandably been very worried about the beloved actor's condition, and we're happy to report that Peter is already recovering. His wife, Angie, posted the following message to Reddit:

"Hello all!
Thank you for all the well wishes, prayers, good vibes, and happy thoughts.
Peter is indeed in the hospital with pneumonia.
He will make a full recovery, and hope to be discharged within a few days. Doctors are incredibly happy with his improvements.
Sorry for the absence, we left our tablets at home, so we have been unable to post to reddit for a bit. I'll make sure he pops in later in the day.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!
Love,
Angie Mayhew"

We certainly wish Peter and his family the best and hope he is back on his feet very soon!

Peter Mayhew Talks Episode VII

By: Benjamin Hart

Peter Mayhew, the mighty Chewbacca himself, is currently on break from filming Star Wars Episode VII and recently made an appearance at Wizard World San Antonio Comic Con in his home state of Texas. According to Blastr, Peter discussed newest job at length:

"Obviously, this isn’t Mayhew’s first space rodeo, and he didn’t leak any major details. But after joking that he was working on a little project that he thinks some people might show up to watch, he said the J.J. Abrams-directed Episode VII “will be the best Star Wars film I will have seen.” Mayhew added the film will utilize no, or very little, computer generated effects and will instead be very practical."

Peter added that the day the infamous cast photo was taken was first time time he had seen Harrison Ford in a long time, who is said to have "throttled" Peter with a hug. He also said that "all those facts are wrong" in regards to Harrison's ankle injury. If you want to watch the full panel, you can do so here.

Also in attendance at the convention was our very own David Gremillion. The Get Your Geek On host caught up with Peter at his autograph booth. He said that J.J. Abrams is a "great guy" who "knows everyone wants a good, solid story". And about his health, Peter added "I'm able to walk mostly without the aid of a cane or crutch. Of course, I can walk from here to the hotel, but that's about enough I guess."

But the most interesting part of the chat was when David asked Peter for details on Episode VII:

"Peter Mayhew sat back, thought for a moment, and put one of those huge hands to his head. And he flipped me the bird. Yep, Chewbacca showed me the third digit on his left hand and grinned. "And that one has Mouse ears on it." He didn't mean in it in an offensive way, he didn't do it because he was angry, he did it because he knew what I knew. No way he talks about Episode VII. Why? Because he's excited for it. "JJ gets it." --Peter Mayhew"
