By: Benjamin Hart

This December feels pretty unusual with the absence of a new a Star Wars film releasing. Star Wars: Episode IX is still a tad more than a year away from being released in theaters, so we have a lengthy wait ahead of us as the film is still in production. So far we've heard next to nothing about the plot, and that likely won't change for a while thanks to the extreme secrecy surrounding the project. In a new interview, Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, spoke about the ways Lucasfilm is currently preventing leaks.

By Ciaran Duggan,

The famous Luke and Leia swinging over the chasm scene was filmed for the first Star Wars movie in 1976.

Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher practiced their moves over the course of a number of takes. They completed the highly choreographed scene by jumping onto a crash mat that was right in front of them.

Mark Hamill Voices Han Solo In 'The Force Awakens' Bad Lip Reading

The brilliant folks at Bad Lip Reading have released a brand new video where they revealed their own twisted and hilarious version of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. BLP is well known for their viral videos that dub over the original dialogue of movies, TV shows and more(Admit it: You've had that Seagull song stuck in your head at least once.)

Their rendition of The Force Awakens is especially awesome and funny because it includes the voice of The Last Jedi himself, Mark Hamill. If you have heard Mark speak at all at length, you know he can do a pretty hilarious impersonation of his longtime Star Wars co-star Harrison Ford. For the video, the BLP team got Hamill to dub over some of Han Solo's scenes in The Force Awakens, turning some of the film's most emotional moments into comedy gold. You can watch the video in full below:

New Thrawn Trilogy Cover Art Revealed

By: Benjamin Hart

Last month we received word that the legendary Thrawn Trilogy of novels, written by Timothy Zahn, would be getting a makevoer with some new covers very soon. Today, Club Jade alerted us to a new report by Jedi Bibliothek in which they revealed the new cover artwork for Heir To The Empire, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command. Jedi Bibliothek explains that the trilogy will be reissued in the U.S. in paperback form on September 27th.

The artwork is truly fantastic, featuring Han, Luke and Leia prominently, and of course, Grand Admiral Thrawn. These novels really seem to capitalize on Thrawn much more than the original cover art did, most likely to coincide with Thrawn being brought back into canon with his upcoming appearance in Star Wars Rebels. As you can see above, all of the covers can be joined together to form a complete, panoramic image. You can get a detailed look at the covers below:

Update: Del Rey confirmed via the Star Wars Books Facebook page that the artwork was created by artist Rich Kelly.

'The Sun' Exclusively Interviews Mark Hamill On May The Fourth

By Ciaran Duggan,

It has been a manic day of breaking news on official Star Wars Day and it doesn't stop here. Today, Mark Hamill has released a column in the reputed British press agency, The Sun. In his article, Hamill implores fans and, readers of The Sun, to donate funds to the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. The online article also features an exclusive interview of Mark Hamill, conducted by an editor of The Sun. Take a look at the Q&A interview below.

In typical Hamill style however, he reveals the existence of a revised scene of The Force Awakens, which was originally going to be the opening sequence of the film. Hamill disclosed this information, in response to a question about the difficulties of keeping things secret in the new world of social media.

Hamill: "When I first starting reading, I won't name the websites, you read the leaks and stuff, I'd say "That's rich. They're so wrong." Then one day, I read the first fifteen minutes absolutely accurately.

I can tell you now the original opening shot of Episode VII. The first thing that came into frame was a hand with a lightsaber...a severed hand....that enters the atmosphere and the hand burns away. Everything burns away and then the lightsaber goes sticking into the surface of Jakku, the planet that Rey lives on. And this alien hand comes in, I don't know if it was Maz, but it was an alien hand that comes in and then the movie proceeds as you see it."

Has Hamill confirmed the origin story of how Maz obtained possession of Luke's lighstaber? Why wasn't this scene shown in the Blu-Ray deleted scenes reel?

It wasn't the only revelation that Hamill imparted to the interview however. He did not discredit the possibility that Luke Skywalker will fight in a lightsaber duel in Episode VIII.

Interviewer: Do you still keep up your fencing skills for lightsaber fights?

Hamill: Again, I'm under an NDA, which is a non-dislosure agreement, but its possible.

As ever with a Mark Hamill interview, he will leave you with something compelling to think and talk about.

What do you make about the comments Mark made? Let us know below.

J.J. Abrams Reveals That Mark Hamill Was Hesitant About His Return As Luke Skywalker

By: Benjamin Hart

Last night Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams appeared on stage at the Tribeca Film Festival with actor and comedian Chris Rock and participated in a Q & A. Abrams caused quite a stir online after he gave away a hint about Rey's parents(which he later clarified). But it appears that wasn't all he revealed, as IGN has reported on some highlights from the discussion which sheds some light on some behind the scenes drama that took place. Specifically the fact that it took some convincing to get Mark Hamill back as Luke Skywalker.

First of all, he responded to critics of the film who have claimed that Episode VII is a "remake" of Episode IV: A New Hope. He reassures that upcoming films will tread new ground:

“This movie [The Force Awakens] was a bridge and a kind of reminder; the audience needed to be reminded what Star Wars is, but it needed to be established with something familiar, with a sense of where we are going to new lands, which is very much what 8 and 9 do... The weird thing about that movie is that it had been so long since the last one. Obviously the prequels had existed in between and we wanted to, sort of, reclaim the story. So we very consciously - and I know it is derided for this - we very consciously tried to borrow familiar beats so the rest of the movie could hang on something that we knew was Star Wars.”

Abrams also explains that there was actually a bright spot to the otherwise terrible situation surrounding Harrison Ford's infamous on set injury:

"When I was on the set of the Millennium Falcon and we started to do work with Rey and Finn, the first time we did it, it didn’t work at all. It was much more contentious. I didn’t direct it right. It was set up all wrong, and when Harrison Ford got injured - which was a very scary day - we ended up having a few weeks off, and it was during that time that I really got to look at what we had done and rewrite quite a bit of that relationship. So when we came back to work again, we actually just reshot from the ground up, those scenes. It was an amazingly helpful thing to get these  two characters to where they needed to be.”

In addition, he reveals that Mark Hamill wasn't always on board with the idea of only have on scene and no dialogue at the end of the film:

“We knew that getting to Luke was the whole story, and I was desperate to do the next chunk that we knew would not fit into this one movie. But, we knew that we had that ending, but it was a frightening and tricky thing to do, but at first and in all honesty, Mark Hamill was a little resistant... Imagine reading Star Wars, imagine being Mark Hamill and you get the script for the new Star Wars. 'Oh the opening is good, page two, oh, three and so on - what the f**k is the going on, I’m three pages before the end, the last page, what?' He was so kind to do it, and at first he was like, 'Will it seem silly, will it be a joke that he is standing there?' I said to him, ‘I don’t think it will.’ I said because the whole movie is about that, it could be a great fun drum roll, up to seeing this guy.”

Abrams admits that it wasn't until they were filming the scenes on Skellig Michael Island in Ireland that he realized himself that the ending would indeed work. You can check out IGN's full recap here.

I have to say, how they decided to use Luke in The Force Awakens was both brilliant and gutsy. Many(including myself) would have put Luke front and center in this film if they had had their way. But Abrams and his crew took the risk and it paid off incredibly well. Episode VII was a great (almost literal) cliffhanger that left us all wanting to see Episode VIII. We're bound to see much more of Luke when that film hits theaters December 15th, 2017.

Video: Mark Hamill Talks Star Wars Past & Present At The University Of Cambridge

By: Benjamin Hart

Mark Hamill, the man behind Luke Skywalker(and Darth Bane once), is truly a treasured member of the Star Wars family. After just recently stepping into the forefront with his brief but memorable appearance at the end of Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, Mark is now out and about chatting about the Wars. While in England for the beginning of production on Star Wars: Episode VIII, he was invited to speak at the Cambridge Union Society at the prestigious University Of Cambridge. During the lengthy discussion Hamill went in depth about his early life, how he came to audition for Star Wars in the first place, and shared some interesting insight into the 1977 film's production. He explains that Luke's surname was actually "Starkiller" and wasn't changed to Skywalker until production was well underway, a change that Mark himself admits he didn't agree with at the time. He also went on to discuss what led him to return to Star Wars in The Force Awakens and even took time to sign a fan's Lightsaber. Mark's insight and wit are always a pleasure to hear, so be sure to check out the video below featuring highlights from the event:

'The Force Awakens' Producer Discusses An Alternate Final Shot

By: Benjamin Hart

Along with everything else that it brought to the Galaxy far, far away, Star Wars: The Force Awakens gave us the most unique final scenes of any Star Wars film to date. The aerial panning shot of Rey and Luke on the cliff just before the iris out in the credits was a stunning end to an emotional scene and film, but it could have been different. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Co-producer Ben Rosenblatt recently spoke about his work on The Force Awakens at the Hollywood Professional Association Tech Retreat in Palm Springs, California. He explains that an alternate version of the scene was considered. THR reports:

"The final shot of the film was lensed from a helicopter, looking down at Rey and Luke, but Rosenblatt admitted that director J.J. Abrams was conflicted about using that shot or concluding with a close-up of Rey. He added that the decision was driven by John Williams' score, and it "left you with this sweeping emotional epic [feel], and you’re going to see a lot of that in Episode VIII.”

He also added that approximately 482 different versions of The Force Awakens were produced to accommodate different aspect ratios, numerous languages and more, making last minute changes daunting.. He also talked about about high dynamic range (HDR) in relation to The Force Awakens.

I personally really liked the last shot we see in the film. I also find it interesting that it could be at least somewhat representative of what we will be seeing in Episode VIII. Would have rather have seen a different shot? Let us know the comments below!

J.J. Abrams & Mark Hamill Discuss Luke Skywalker In 'The Force Awakens'

By: Benjamin Hart

Entertainment Weekly is continuing their amazing coverage of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens with a brand new article focused on one of the most talked about, and seemingly non-existent stars of the film; Luke Skywalker.

First off, Abrams confirms that “No one forgot about him!” in response to those who have pointed out that lack of Luke Skywalker in the promotional material for the film. He adds:

"We were hoping people would care, but there are a lot of things that are not on the poster, as busy as the poster is. Certainly Luke is a very important aspect of the story.”

While no one in the real world seems to have forgotten about Luke, it appears many in the Galaxy far, far away are unfamiliar with the Jedi and other heroes of the Original Trilogy. Abrams explains:

“It was the thing that struck me the hardest, which was the idea that doing a story that took place nearly 40 years after Jedi meant that there would be a generation for whom Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia would be as good as myth. They’d be as old and as mythic as the tale of King Arthur. They would be characters who they may have heard of, but maybe not. They’d be characters who they might believe existed, or just sounded like a fairy tale.”

He also speaks specifically about Rey's backgrounds and what they may know about these "legends".

“To someone who is living alone and struggling without a formal education or support system, who knows what that person in the literal middle of nowhere would have ever heard about any of these things, or would ever know, and how much that person would have to infer and piece together on their own. So the idea that someone like that would begin to learn that the Jedi were real, and that the Force exists, and that there’s a power in the universe that sounds fanciful but is actually possible, was an incredibly intriguing notion.”

John Boyega chimes in to discuss Finn's side of the story:

“For Finn, he’s been raised from the ashes of the Empire. He’s been taught about Luke Skywalker, he knows about his history. For him it’s like joining the army and then learning about one of the great enemies of your country. It has that effect on him. But in terms of the Force, and the magical stuff that happens, that is the point where Finn kind of questions what is what. What is the Force, what part does Luke Skywalker play in all of this?”
And when it comes to Han Solo, Boyega adds that the Smuggler is not someone Finn as familliar with:

“To a stormtrooper they’ve probably been given a watered down bit about Han Solo or something. It doesn’t feel as magical and mythical and historical, so you know. It’s quite fun playing that not really knowing who these people are.”

EW hints at both character's backstories, mentioning that Rey was "abandoned on the desert world of Jakku as a child" and that Finn was "raised from childhood to be a stormtrooper for The First Order."

Later EW spoke with Mark Hamill about his character, asking, "What’s the best or most interesting piece of insider direction that J.J. gave you as you got back into the character you created?" Hamill replied:

“I’d like to answer that, but it would give away the secrets of Episode VII."

They also quizzed him on which questions fans should be asking, to which he responded:

“None! There should be no questions. You go in and it’s a brand new fresh approach at a franchise that we’ve known all our lives."

Be sure to go here to check out the full article which reveals much more! And stay tuned for even more The Force Awakens goodness from Entertainment Weekly coming tomorrow!
